Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Opens New Year With 67-57 Road Win At Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 3, 2023) – The USMMA men's basketball team rang in the New Year with a 10-point Skyline North Division victory at Sarah Lawrence College on Tuesday night, 67-57, to snap a five-game losing streak. The win improved the Mariners' record to 4-8 (2-1 Skyline), while the Gryphons fall to 3-9 (1-2 Skyline) with the loss.

Game File Junior Bryce Bristow (Plano, Texas) led all players on the night with 24 points, while also tying for the game-high with nine rebounds. He was one of three Mariners to score in double digits, as sophomore Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, N.J.) added 17 points and classmate Isaac Vencel (Bloomington, Ind.) chipped in with 12 points to go along with game-bests of six steals and five assists. Senior Kevin Doty (Bayport, N.Y.) matched Bristow for the game-high with nine boards.

Neither team held an advantage of more than three points over the first 15 minutes of the game until Sarah Lawrence grabbed its largest lead of the night at six points, 25-19, on a three-pointer at 4:48. Merchant Marine fought right back to take the lead at 2:31 after eight-straight points made it 27-25 in favor of the visitors, and they would go ahead by three, 32-29, at the halftime break.

Action was close the entire second half, but after the Gryphons took a one-point lead, 38-37 at 15:33, the Mariners would take the lead for good under a minute later after sophomore Drew Zalescik (Lambertville, N.J.) drained a pair of free throws.

The advantage hit as high as eight points, 47-39 with 9:24 to play, however SLC would not go quietly. The hosts clawed back to within just three points at 5:47 after an 8-3 run. Vencel drained a 3 shortly after and USMMA kept it a two-possession game until pulling away in the closing minutes thanks in large part to making 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch.

For Sarah Lawrence, freshman Eamon Kelly scored a team-best 16 points, while junior Lucas Murray scored 15 points and brought down a team-high seven rebounds.

Up next, the Mariners will play host to Manhattanville College this coming Saturday, Jan. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
