Postgame Interviews (Dahlke & Demos)

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 2022) – The USMMA women's basketball team used a 63-27 advantage in rebounds to defeat the visiting Old Westbury Panthers on Tuesday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium, 66-57. The win was the Mariners' fourth-straight and improved their record to 12-3 (8-3 Skyline), while OW falls to 4-6 (3-5 Skyline) with the loss.

Freshman Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho), junior Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) and sophomore Bryanne Buchanan-Cummings (Dacula, Ga.) all recorded double-doubles for Merchant Marine. Jackson led all players with 20 points and 15 rebounds, Demos added 10 points and 14 boards and Buchanan-Cummings put together an 11point, 10-rebound performance. Two other players scored in double-figures – Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) with 13 points and freshman Abby Stramski (Jones, Okla.) with 10.

After Old Westbury scored two of the first three baskets of the game, the Mariners built up a five-point lead in the first four minutes of the game that they extended to six, 18-12, by the end of the frame.

In the second quarter, the host's advantage hit double-digits early, but the Panthers fought back and remained within striking distance throughout. OW hit a free throw late to make it a three-point game, but Stramski cashed in on a layup to finish the scoring, sending Merchant Marine into the locker room with a 31-26 lead.

Just over halfway through the third, the Mariners earned their largest lead of the game, 12 points (40-28), but a 10-4 run by the visitors made it just a two-possession game, 44-38, going into the final stanza.

An early three by Old Westbury brought them to within what wound up being the closest the Panthers would come the rest of the night, three points (44-41) at 9:42. USMMA built their lead back up to 10 twice just to see it fall back down to five with 3:37 to play, however the Mariners were able to keep OW at bay the remainder of the night.

Four players scored in double-digits for the Panthers – sophomore Melinda Harris had a team-best 17, junior Cherish Francis and sophomore Ashley Cattle both added 14 each and junior Ja'nya Flash drained 12 as part of a double-double effort with 10 rebounds.

The Mariners will hit the road for the first time in 2022 this coming Saturday with a Skyline contest at Farmingdale State beginning at 2 p.m. at the Rams' Lynch Center Gym. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
