After Old Westbury scored two of the first three baskets of the game, the Mariners built up a five-point lead in the first four minutes of the game that they extended to six, 18-12, by the end of the frame.
Â
In the second quarter, the host's advantage hit double-digits early, but the Panthers fought back and remained within striking distance throughout. OW hit a free throw late to make it a three-point game, but Stramski cashed in on a layup to finish the scoring, sending Merchant Marine into the locker room with a 31-26 lead.
Â
Just over halfway through the third, the Mariners earned their largest lead of the game, 12 points (40-28), but a 10-4 run by the visitors made it just a two-possession game, 44-38, going into the final stanza.
Â
An early three by Old Westbury brought them to within what wound up being the closest the Panthers would come the rest of the night, three points (44-41) at 9:42. USMMA built their lead back up to 10 twice just to see it fall back down to five with 3:37 to play, however the Mariners were able to keep OW at bay the remainder of the night.
Â
Four players scored in double-digits for the Panthers – sophomore Melinda Harris had a team-best 17, junior Cherish Francis and sophomore Ashley Cattle both added 14 each and junior Ja'nya Flash drained 12 as part of a double-double effort with 10 rebounds.
