Raab Masterful In Opener As Mariners Sweep CMSV On Saturday

Game 1 Box Score: USMMA 4 – CMSV 0
Game 2 Box Score: USMMA 11 – CMSV 1

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 24, 2021) – Senior lefty hurler Joe Raab (Edwardsburg, Mich.) was absolutely dominant in the first game of the USMMA baseball team's Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday against Mount St. Vincent at Bartoszek Field, tossing yet another complete-game gem, this a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in the Mariners' 4-0 win to pick up his third victory of the season. The Mariners went on to win the second game, 11-1, for the sweep on the day, improving their record to 9-3 (8-3 Skyline), while the Dolphins fall to 10-5 (6-5 Skyline) with the losses.

Raab was really dealing today, as he was perfect through five innings before allowing a walk in the sixth and another in the seventh, then was just one out away from a no-hitter in the bottom of the seventh before a looper to left field fell in despite a diving defensive effort. Raab lowered his season ERA to a microscopic 0.96 after the performance.

At the plate, sophomore Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) drove in half of the Mariners runs as he finished 2-for-4. Freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) and senior Jack McCann (Newark, Del.) also had RBIs in the opener. Junior Zac Skov (San Clemente, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with a triple and scored twice, while senior Timmy Chase (Scituate, Mass.) was 2-for-3 and also scored two times.

In the second game, the Mariners opened the scoring in the top of the first on an RBI double by Skov that plated junior Brayden O'Connell (Beaver Dams, N.Y.). They threatened again in the second, loading the bases with one out, but couldn't get a run across.

After getting through the first two innings easily, freshman Jay Piotrowski (Montgomery, Texas) surrendered one run to the Dolphins in the third without giving up a hit, as Mount St. Vincent (who served as the home team today despite playing at Kings Point) tied the score up at 1-1.

Merchant Marine pulled ahead with three runs in the next half-inning and scored in each of the last four innings to complete the sweep on the day.

Junior Billy Todd (Gastonia, N.C.) got the victory after pitching two scoreless innings and giving up just two hits, classmate Quinton Heck (Massillon, Ohio) allowed just one hit in a scoreless sixth and senior Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) earned his fifth three-inning save of the season, finishing off the game with two strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

At the plate, Skov, O'Connell and Millen all had two RBIs each, with O'Connell finishing 4-for-6 and tying for the team-lead with two runs scored along with Zanetti, junior Garrett Aichele (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and senior Jacob Kelly (Norfolk, Va.). The Mariners got four extra-base-hits in the game, Skov's first-inning double and two other two-baggers by Aichele and senior Colin Baker (Clyde Hill, Wash.), and a triple by Kelly, who finished 3-for-4.

Schedule Update: Sunday's action between the Mariners and Dolphins at Bartoszek Field has been changed form a doubleheader to a single game that will now start at 7 p.m. due to the inclement weather expected throughout the morning and afternoon. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
