KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 25, 2021) – The USMMA baseball team won in walk-off fashion, 2-1, in 10 innings over visiting Mount St. Vincent on Sunday night to complete a three-game Skyline sweep of the Dolphins over this weekend. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 10-3 (9-3 Skyline), while CMSV falls to 10-6 (6-6 Skyline) with the loss.

Both starting pitchers were locked in, as the Dolphins' Andrew Geiger pitched into the seventh, allowing one run on just three hits with four strikeouts in 6.1 IP, and Kane pitched into the eighth, and allowed one run on five hits with eight Ks in 7.1 IP.

The Dolphins got on the board first in the third inning after getting a one-out base-runner via a hit-by-pitch who wound up stealing second. After a strikeout, junior Jake Blinstrub got a two-out, RBI single to left that plated the first run of the game.

The Mariners got their first base-runner of the night on a walk in the bottom half of the inning, as senior Timmy Chase (Scituate, Mass.) reached and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt. However, he was stranded there after Geiger induced an inning-ending groundout to second.

Merchant Marine didn't record a hit until the fifth inning when Chase reached base yet again with a single down the right field line. He finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk. Chase made it to second after the Dolphins nearly turned a double-play, though Geiger's throw from the mound to second was too high, but CMSV was able to get the out at first.

Senior Jacob Kelly (Norfolk, Va.) came to the plate with two outs and laced a single down the left field line that brought Chase in to tie the score up at 1-1.

The Mariners threatened in the sixth, getting runners at second and third with one out, but a lucky 5-6-3 putout for the second out followed by a groundout back to Geiger ended the inning.

Both teams got runners to second in both the seventh and eighth innings, but failed to score. In the bottom half of the seventh, the Dolphins went to the bullpen to bring in senior Pedro Fortoso, who wound up finishing the game, while the Mariners turned to senior Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) with one out in the eighth.

Both Fortoso and Hunt pitched 1-2-3 ninth innings and the game went to extras.

After Hunt hurled another three-up, three-down inning in the 10th, the Mariners saw junior Brayden O'Connell (Beaver Dams, N.Y.) work out a one-out walk. The speedy O'Connell then darted for second with Aichele at the plate and got the stolen base and then some, as he advanced to third after the throw by the Dolphin catcher hit him and caromed into the outfield grass towards left field.

With the infield playing in, Aichele hit the ball hard on the ground to the left of the second baseman, who dove for it and got a piece of it, but fired home too late to get O'Connell and the Mariners got the dramatic win.

Hunt earn the victory after tossing 2.2 hitless innings with one strikeout. Fortoso was tacked with the loss despite the unearned run, as he finished with 3.0 IP, one hit and two Ks.

The Mariners will close out the regular season with a pivotal Skyline showdown with Farmingdale State next weekend. The two teams will meet for the first doubleheader out at FSC on Saturday, May 1, beginning at 1 p.m. at Rams Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the games will be available with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
