PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (April 12, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team wrapped up its Skyline Conference series against St. Joseph's-Long Island with a 10-3 loss on the road on Monday out at the Golden Eagles' Gregg Alfano Field. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 7-3 (6-3 Skyline), while SJC improves to 6-5 (5-4 Skyline) with the win.
The Golden Eagles scored first with three in the bottom of the first – quickly loading the bases with no outs before a two-RBI single and a sacrifice fly brought the runs across. The hosts extended their lead to four in the bottom of the second on an RBI-double.
After a scoreless third and fourth, the Mariners broke through to produce a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, the first on an RBI double by sophomore
Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) that scored senior
Timmy Chase (Scituate, Mass.) and then on a sac fly foulout by senior
Colin Baker (Clyde Hill, Wash.) that plated classmate
Jacob Kelly (Norfolk, Va.).
St. Joe's tacked on three more in the bottom of the sixth, however, to improve its lead to 7-2.
Junior
Garrett Aichele (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning to move the score to 7-3, but the Golden Eagles rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the inning to send the game to its final 10-3.
Senior
Ben Kane (Huntington Beach, Calif.) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits with five K's in 5.2 innings.
Junior Ryan Foran earned the win for the Golden Eagles, allowing just two runs on five hits with the strikeouts in six innings. Sophomore Michael Manzolillo picked the save. Junior Charles Rainone was 2-for-5 with a game-high four RBIs.
The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, April 1, to kick off a four-game Skyline series against Old Westbury at home beginning at 12-noon at "The Ray." Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
