KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 29, 2021) – A late comeback effort fell short, as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team lost its season-opener to Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State, 12-10, on Monday night at Brooks Stadium.
Â
Freshman
Reagan Jetter (La Jolla, Calif.) led the Mariners (0-1, 0-1 Skyline) with six goals, while sophomore
Jacqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) scored twice. Sophomore
Phoebe Cho (Fairfax, Va.) and freshman
Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) also found the back of the net once each in the loss. Sheedy helped the Mariners' set up on offense by winning a game-high 10 draw controls, while Jetter scooped up a game-best three groundballs. Sophomore goalie
Hope Germanakos (Lynbrook, N.Y.) made 10 saves on the night.
Â
The game was so close that neither team held a lead of more than two goals until the last six minutes of the game when the Rams scored to go ahead 10-7. The visitors added three of the next four tallies to take a 12-8 lead with just 2:04 to play. Jetter scored twice in the final minute-and-a-half, but it was not enough, as time ran out on the Mariners.
Â
For Farmingdale (2-0, 2-0 Skyline), senior Courtney Gendels led all players on the night with seven points on six goals and one assist. Two other Rams had three assists apiece – sophomore Julia Tuohy and junior Deanna Iannotta. Goalie Ashley Perrini made 11 saves for the victory between the pipes.
Â
Up next, the Mariners will host Skyline rival SUNY Maritime this Saturday, April 3, in the annual "Sound Shootout." Opening draw is scheduled for 12-noon at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
