KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 27, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team won on Monday night in the series-finale against Skyline opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn by the final score of 13-5. The win improves the Mariners' record to 3-0 (3-0 Skyline), while the Bears fall to 0-9 (0-6 Skyline) in defeat.
How It Happened
The Mariners jumped out to an early lead in the first inning with four runs on as many hits. SJC quickly answered with three in the next half-inning.
USMMA scored their fifth run in the fourth on a single by
Brayden O'Connell (Beaver Dams, N.Y.) before plating five runs in the third to take the 10-3 advantage.
The Bears cut the deficit in half in the sixth with two more runs, but the hosts brought in a pair of runs on a triple by freshman
Tommy Payton (Palm Harbor, Fla.) in their end of the stanza, going up 13-5 in the seventh to cap off the scoring in the game to complete the series sweep of the Bears.

- The Mariners got five extra-base hits on the night with two doubles and three triples. Sophomore Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) led the way with two – a double and a triple.
- Senior Jack McCann (Newark, Del.) knocked in a team-best three RBIs, all coming on a first inning triple.
- Senior Colin Baker (Clyde Hill, Wash.) and Payton both knocked in two runs apiece.
- Freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) scored a game-high three times, while four other Mariners had two runs each: Zanetti, O'Connell, junior Zac Skov (San Clemente, Calif.) and senior Zach Coutts (Grand Junction, Colo.).
- The Mariners planned to use many arms in the game, with junior Quinton Heck (Massillon, Ohio) getting the start, allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. He picked up the win. Freshman Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) pitched a scoreless fourth with two K's and junior Billy Todd (Gastonia, N.C.) got the first two outs of the fifth, including one strikeout.
- Senior Joaquin Munoz (Lubbock, Texas) tossed the sixth and classmate Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) came on to earn a three-inning save, not allowing a single hit and fanning three.
- The Mariners had seven stolen bases on the night, with O'Connell and Millen leading the way with two each.
Up Next
This upcoming Friday and Saturday, April 2-3, the Mariners will play Purchase College in a make-up four-game series from an earlier postponement. They are on the road up at the Panthers on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. before coming home to play at The Ray on Saturday starting at noon.
