Mariners Win Twice At Purchase On Friday

Game 1 Box Score: USMMA 7 - Purchase 0
Game 2 Box Score: USMMA 15 - Purchase 6

PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 2, 2021) – The USMMA baseball team played its first two games away from Kings Point on Friday with a Skyline Conference doubleheader up at Purchase College. The Mariners (5-0, 5-0 Skyline) earned a sweep over the Panthers (5-9, 2-9 Skyline) with 7-0 and 15-6 victories.

Game 1 Highlights
  • Senior Joe Raab (Edwardsburg, Mich.) tossed another gem in the seven-inning first game – his second-straight complete game victory, this a shutout where he allowed just four hits and struck out double-digits for the second-consecutive outing (10). He moves to 2-0 on the season.
  • Neither team scored in the first two innings, despite both having chances with runners in scoring position.
  • Senior Colin Baker (Clyde Hill, Wash.) opened the scoring with a two-run home run to left center in the third that plated sophomore Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.).
  • Later in the same inning, junior Zac Skov (San Clemente, Calif.) doubled to bring home classmate Garrett Aichele (Bainbridge Island, Wash.).
  • Purchase threatened with bases loaded on two singles and a walk in the bottom of the fourth, but Raab induced a groundout to get out of the jam. Those were the last two hits he allowed in the game.
  • The Mariners tacked on another run in the sixth on an RBI single by senior Jack McCann (Newark, Del.) that brought in freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.), and then three more in the seventh on an RBI infield-single by Millen that scored Scov and then a two-RBI knock by McCann scoring Millen and senior Timmy Chase (Scituate, Mass.).
  • Raab ended the game striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Baker, Scov, Millen, McCann and freshman Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) all had two hits in the opener. Extra-base hits came from Scov (double), Reistetter (triple) and Baker (home run).
Game 2 Highlights
  • Millen knocked in a team-best five RBIs in the nightcap after going 4-for-6 with one double.
  • Zanetti finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs and was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, as he led off the game with a triple, homered in the fourth and had an RBI double in the seventh.
  • Zanetti tied for the team-high of three runs scored with Aichele, Scov and junior Zach Coutts (Grand Junction, Colo.), and Zanetti along with Coutts and junior Brayden O'Connell (Beaver Dams, N.Y.) all had two RBIs.
  • Baker added an RBI to plate Zanetti in the first and freshman Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.) contributed to the offense by scoring a run as a pinch runner in the seventh.
  • Aichele stole four bases on the day, including three in the second game, as Merchant Marine tallied a total of six swipes over the two games.
  • Reistetter earned his first collegiate victory on the bump, tossing 3.2 innings, giving up three runs (just one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts.
  • Senior Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) picked up his third three-inning save of the season, allowing no runs on three hits with one strikeout.
