BRONX, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team was victorious on the road at Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Vincent in a low-scoring affair on Thursday night, 45-42. The win improves the Mariners' record to 6-1 (5-1 Skyline), while the Dolphins fall to 5-3 (3-3 Skyline) in defeat.
Two Mariners scored in double-figures, as freshman
Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) recorded a double-double with a team-best 11 points and 11 rebounds to go along with a game-best four assists and classmate
Abby Stramski (Jones, Okla.) added 10 points and five boards.
Senior
Madison Reddick (Baker, Mont.) brought down nine rebounds and three other Mariners had six boards each – senior
Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.), junior
Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) and sophomore
Jalen Douglas (Waldorf, Md.), with Demos and Douglas both scoring six points apiece.
Neither team scored in the first six minutes of the game, and USMMA held CMSV without a field goal in the entire opening quarter. The Dolphins scored just three points, all on free throws. However, the Mariners scored only eight points themselves.
Both teams had 11 points in the second quarter, as Merchant Marine took a 19-14 lead into the halftime break.
After the two teams traded the first three baskets of the third quarter starting with the Mariners, who were up by seven at 9:18, Mount St. Vincent fought back to within just one point, 23-22 at 6:11, with six-straight. USMMA quickly answered back with an 8-1 run and went on to lead by six at the end of the third.
The visitors' lead got back up to a game-high nine points after the first basket of the fourth, but the Dolphins cut it back down to three four times over a six-minute span before finally coming to within just two at 43-41 with 44 seconds to play. In the final 10 seconds, the Mariners hit two free throws, while Mount St. Vincent could only muster up one freebie.
For the Dolphins, senior Victoria Hanley led all players in the game with 21 points, while junior Amber Been had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Up next, the Mariners will travel right back up to Mount St. Vincent this Sunday to take on Yeshiva University in another Skyline Conference showdown. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Sharp Center Gym. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
