BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Dec. 7, 2021) – The USMMA women's basketball team won on the road at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, 80-58, in a rematch of the 2020 Skyline Championship Game on Tuesday night at the Bears' Hill Center. The win improves the Mariners' record to 5-1 (4-1 Skyline), while SJC falls to 1-6 (1-3 Skyline) in defeat.
Freshman
Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) had a game-high 26 points and filled the box score with seven steals, six rebounds, five assists and a block. She shot 54.4% from the field. Four other Mariners scored in double-figures – junior
Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) with 12 and a game-high 16 rebounds as part of a double-double effort, and senior
Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) and freshmen
Abby Stramski (Jones, Okla.) and
Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.) with 10 points each. Dahlke also led all players in the game with seven assists, while Stramski dished out five assists.
The Mariners raced out to a 24-15 lead in the opening quarter and put together three-straight 20-plus-point quarters to hold a 68-41 lead after 30 minutes. Merchant Marine finished the night shooting 42.4% (38-for-90) to St. Joseph's 40.0% (22-for-55). The Mariners also played it very safe with the ball, turning it over just six times to the Bears' 26, and they turned those TOs into 33 points.
A pair of Bears registered double-doubles, as senior Kelly O'Donnell had a team-best 16 points with 11 rebounds and junior Ayomide Adeoye added 13 points and team-high 12 rebounds. Senior Jamie Provino and junior Alexis Breen both had six assists.
The Mariners return to action on Thursday night, Dec. 9, when they travel to the Bronx to take on Skyline opponent Mount St. Vincent. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Dolphins' Sharp Center Gym. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
