BRONX, N.Y. (Dec. 14, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team held an opponent to its lowest total of the season, as the Mariners defeated Lehman College on the road Tuesday night, 64-37. The triumph was USMMA's fourth-straight and improves their record to 8-1, while the Lightning fall to 1-6 with the loss.
 
Freshman Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) recorded a double-double for the third-straight game, this time with a game-high 25 points and a team-best 12 rebounds to go along with five steals. Senior Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) added 12 points and junior Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) chipped in with nine points, seven rebounds and tied for the game-high with six steals.
 
Lehman committed 26 turnovers on the night, thanks in large part to 16 steals by the Mariners. They turned those TOs into 27 points and also out-rebounded the Lightning, 45-31, with 20 offensive boards that turned into 18 second-chance points.
 
Merchant Marine's lead hit double-digits at 2:35 of the first quarter and never fell back under 10 points the remainder of the night.
 
For Lehman, freshman Mojisola Shokeye led the way with 18 points, while classmate Brianna Barnes had a double-double effort with 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds and six steals
 
The Mariners will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 16, in a make-up of the previously postponed home Skyline Contest against Mount St. Mary. Tipoff against the Knights is scheduled for 5 p.m. as the first game of a doubleheader with the USMMA men's team at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
