KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2021) – Longtime U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse head coach Tom Gill has announced that after a 31-year storied career on the sidelines at Kings Point, December 2021 will be his last month at the Academy. Gill has led the men's lacrosse program at USMMA since the 1990-91 academic year, after previous head coaching stints in the 1980s at FDU-Florham and Pfeiffer University, and before that at the high school level.
 
Gill boasts a 230-199 career record over 31 seasons at Kings Point and led the Mariners to three conference championships and trips to the NCAA Tournament (2007, 2009 and 2018), with the program picking up its first-ever NCAA Tourney victory in 2018. Gill ranks as the 19th all-time winningest coach among NCAA Division III head coaches with 275 victories at both FDU-Florham and USMMA. (Pfeiffer was NAIA.)
 
He coached the Mariners to 12 conference championship games over the Hudson Valley Lacrosse League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, the Skyline Conference and the Landmark Conference.
 
A total of five players earned six All-America honors under Gill's tutelage, and the program also had three NCAA National Statistical Champions on his watch. His student-athletes excelled in the classroom as well, as a total of eight Mariners were selected as Academic All-Americans.
 
Gill is a two-time Hall of Fame Inductee, having been enshrined at both the Long Island/Metro Lacrosse Foundation and the NJCAA Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association Halls of Fame.
 
A five-time recipient of the Academy's Dr. Stephen "Bill" Omeltchenko Coach of the Year Award (1994, 1998, 2007, 2017 and 2018), Gill has also been named the conference Coach of the Year three times – in 2007 by the Skyline Conference and in 2009 and 2013 by the Landmark Conference. He has also been active in and served the academy community both as a physical education instructor and on numerous boards and committees.
 
He leaves a lasting legacy on the entire U.S. Merchant Marine Academy community, especially the Department of Physical Education & Athletics and the men's lacrosse program.
