KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team won a close one at home over Skyline opponent Farmingdale State, 55-50, on Tuesday night to ride its season-opening win-streak to four games.

The game was tied 17-17 after the first quarter and knotted up again, 26-26, at halftime. The Mariners (4-0, 3-0 Skyline) started to pull away in the third quarter, when they built up a double-digit lead late, but the Rams (1-3, 1-2 Skyline) fought all the way back to within just two points after an 8-0 run spanning the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter.

USMMA jumped back up to a seven-point lead, 50-43, at 6:12 of the fourth, but five-straight from FSC once again made it a two-point game. Back-to-back jumpers by the Mariners in the final minute-and-a-half put them up by six with just 33 seconds left, and the Rams missed three shots on their next possession before finally cashing in on a layup with just seven seconds to play, all but sealing the victory for Merchant Marine.

Freshman Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) led the Mariners with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds, while sophomore Jalen Douglas (Waldorf, Md.) just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Sophomore Bryanne Buchanan-Cummings (Dacula, Ga.) brought down a game-high 14 rebounds and added eight points, while senior Madison Reddick (Baker, Mont.) had a solid night with seven points, nine boards and three assists.

Two other players chipped in with six points each, senior Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) and freshman Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.), with Demos also bringing down seven boards and recording a game-high four steals, while Winston dished out three assists.

The Mariners out-rebounded the Rams, 53-33, including 29 offensive rebounds which turned into 23 second-chance points. Farmingdale St. shot better than USMMA on the night, however, connecting on 35.4% (20-for-55) to the Mariners' 28.8%.

For the Rams, freshman Layla Mendoza scored a game-best 19 points, while also bringing down eight rebounds, and senior Anna Zaborowska nearly had a double-double with 16 points and nine boards.

Mariners will have the Thanksgiving break off and will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 1, when they travel up to Manhattanville College for a big Skyline showdown with the Valiants. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Ville's Kennedy Gymnasium. Live links for the game will be posted on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
