KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 21, 2015) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team lost its home-opener to Landmark Conference opponent Goucher, 17-4, on Saturday at Brooks Stadium. The defeat drops the Mariners to 0-3 (0-1 Landmark), while the Gophers improve to 7-2 (1-0 Landmark).
Freshman Madeline Thibeault (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) scored three times for the Mariners and also added an assist. Sophomore Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) also found the back of the net for the home squad. In goal, junior Rachel Smith (Broomfield, Colo.) made four saves, while also picking up a team-high three groundballs.
Goucher was led by freshman Jojo Franklin, who tallied a game-high six points (three goals, three assists). Freshman Zoe Merz was not far behind Fraklin with three goals and two helpers. Three Gophers scored twice as freshman Jessica Borucki had two goals and two assists, while senior Anneke Ossorio and freshman Sophie Smith both found the back of the night twice. Five other players tallied a goal for the visitors. In net, senior Emily Gill earned the victory, playing the opening half and making one save. Freshman Bridget Den Boer was between the pipes in the second half for Goucher to help solidify the victory.
Merchant Marine returns to action on Saturday, April 28, with a trip to Elizabethtown, Pa., to take on the Landmark's newest member, the Blue Jays of E-Town (3-3, 0-1 Landmark). First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Elizabethtown's Wolf Field.
