United States Merchant Marine Academy

Jason Miller serves as an assistant coach for the United States Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse program, where he coordinates the Mariners' defense. Since joining the staff in 2022, he has helped guide one of the Skyline Conference's premier programs. Under his direction, no Merchant Marine defense has allowed more than 10 goals per game in a season, while the 2026 Mariners ranked 19th nationally in scoring defense and led all of NCAA Division III in opponents' clear percentage.
 
Over the past four seasons, USMMA has compiled a 41-24 record, advanced to three Skyline Conference Championship games, and captured the 2023 Skyline Conference title to earn a berth in the 2023 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament.
 
As the Mariners' defensive coordinator and goalie coach, Miller has developed 18 All-Skyline Conference defenders and goalkeepers. His players have also reached significant individual milestones, including Michael Valentine becoming the program's all-time leader in caused turnovers in 2026 and defensive midfielder Michael Hofstetter earning the Admiral Giles C. Stedman Trophy as USMMA's top male athlete.
 
Miller brings more than three decades of collegiate coaching experience across NCAA Divisions I and III, with a proven track record of developing elite defensive units, goalkeepers, and student-athletes. Before joining USMMA, he spent 16 seasons as head coach at St. John's University, becoming the longest-tenured head coach in program history. Following the program's reinstatement, he guided the Red Storm to a No. 20 national ranking and an appearance in the 2012 BIG EAST Championship Game while earning signature victories over Notre Dame, Georgetown, Yale, and Hofstra. During his tenure, St. John's produced numerous All-BIG EAST, All-ECAC, and USILA honorees, while more than 100 student-athletes earned conference academic honors.
 
Earlier in his career, Miller served as defensive coordinator at the University of Massachusetts, helping lead the Minutemen to the 2006 NCAA Division I National Championship Game. That season, UMass defender Jack Reid was named a finalist for the Schmeisser Award, presented annually to the nation's top defenseman.
 
Miller also coached at the United States Military Academy, where he helped Army win Patriot League championships and return to the NCAA Tournament. His coaching career also includes stops at Rochester Institute of Technology, Springfield College, and Franklin & Marshall College.
 
A 1993 graduate of Springfield College, Miller earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management before completing a master's degree in Education with a concentration in Athletic Administration. A former collegiate defenseman, he is known for developing fundamentally sound defenders and goalkeepers while fostering leadership, accountability, and a team-first culture.
 
Throughout his coaching career, Miller has remained committed to preparing student-athletes for success beyond the playing field by emphasizing discipline, resilience, competitive excellence, and servant leadership – values that align closely with the mission of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
