Rich Cain has been a constant at the USMMA waterfront since 1987 when he came onboard as a deckhand/engineer for the T/V KINGS POINTER as a contractor.
He was charged with engine room watches, usually the 12-6 watch, and also assisted the deck department where needed, and everything in between. Cain was recruited
by Jack Sussi in 1990 to become the fleet engineer and was charged with the upkeep of every moving part and engine on the Waterfront. In 1995, he was promoted to
Marine Foreman in charge of the staff "downstairs."
Cain became an Official Government Employee as the Assistant Waterfront Director in 1998, serving under four different Waterfront Directors and Masters of the Kings
Point including the last before him, Capt. Christopher Gasiorek, Class of 1995. Upon Chris’s departure, Cain assumed the role of Acting Waterfront Director until he was
officially held the role of Director of USMMA Department of Waterfront Operations and Training since 2018.
The Acta Non Verba Award is the highest honor presented by the Department of Athletics and honors an individual or organization who has gone far beyond expectations in his or her support of the young men and women of Kings Point Athletics. Rich Cain has had an extremely positive impact not only on the varsity Waterfront teams at KP, but on our NCAA-sponsored programs as well. Cain oversaw the very successful hosting of the ICSA 2023 College Sailing National Championship in Kings Point. He has worked very closely with a number of our NCAA teams, including serving as a team mentor for the women’s basketball team throughout their magical championship runs in 2019, 2020 and 2023.
