United States Merchant Marine Academy

EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS

Jack Buono '78

2024 Recipient

Jack Buono, the 13th Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), exemplified compassionate and resilient leadership during
some of the Academy’s most challenging times, including two government shutdowns and the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. A firm believer in the
transformative power of athletics, Buono often stated, “I learned more about leadership on the soccer field than I did in the classroom,” emphasizing his personal
conviction that sports play a unique role in shaping leaders.

Under his leadership, Buono prioritized the integration of sports into the Academy’s culture, understanding that the athletic field is a proving ground for teamwork,
discipline, and perseverance. When government shutdowns and COVID disruptions threatened normal operations, he was unwavering in his support for maintaining
athletic programs, adapting to restrictions while still providing opportunities for students to stay engaged and active. Buono’s commitment to sports wasn’t just about
physical conditioning; he saw it as a way to build resilience and camaraderie among midshipmen, which became essential as they navigated uncertainty together.

Buono’s leadership extended beyond the field, fostering a supportive environment where midshipmen could grow into leaders both in and out of the classroom. His dedication to their holistic development—mind, body, and spirit—ensured that USMMA graduates left the Academy with a deep sense of resilience, ready to serve as leaders in the maritime industry and beyond.
