YONKERS, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2026) - The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team defeated Sarah Lawrence, 2-0, on the road in Skyline Conference action on Saturday evening at Fleming Park. The Mariners improved to 2-2-4 overall and 1-0-1 in Skyline play, while the Gryphons fell to 1-3-3 overall and 0-1-0 in conference action.

The Blue and Gray applied pressure early and often throughout the first half. Senior Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.) had the Mariners' first chance in the eighth minute, but his attempt went wide right. Junior Colin Robertson (Milford, Mich.) followed with a shot over the net in the 13th minute, and sophomore Ethan Schuette (Gig Harbor, Wash.) sent an attempt wide left in the 18th minute.
Merchant Marine nearly broke through in the 20th minute when Jung's shot struck the crossbar before freshman Cameron Westerfield (Houston, Texas) found the back of the net off a feed from Robertson in the 19th minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Sarah Lawrence looked for the equalizer later in the half, but senior Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) turned away a Ryan Gunderson shot in the 26th minute and denied Matthew Donnis in the 34th minute to send USMMA into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Merchant Marine continued to control the offensive tempo, outshooting Sarah Lawrence 16-1 in the second half. Zalis denied Robertson in the 47th minute before turning away junior Robert Derwin's (East Meadow, N.Y.) and sophomore Alex Hwang's (Centreville, Va.) blasts in the 52nd minute and 74th minute to keep the Mariners' advantage at 1-0. The Blue and Gray finally added an insurance tally in the 79th minute when Derwin found the back of the net off a feed from freshman Drew Coyne (Harrington, N.J.), doubling the lead to 2-0 and securing the road win.
USMMA outshot Sarah Lawrence 23-4 overall and controlled the corner kicks 7-0.
Howell picked up his first victory of the season and second clean sheet for the Mariners with two saves, while Zalis made four stops for the Gryphons.
The Mariners return to Skyline Conference action on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when they travel to St. Joseph's-Long Island for a 6 p.m. contest.
