KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 2, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team came up just short in the Skyline Conference Championship Game on Saturday afternoon, falling to rival SUNY Maritime, 13-12, at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners built an early lead, but the Privateers used a strong second half to edge ahead and hold off a late push. With the result, USMMA closes the season at 11-6, while Maritime improves to 10-8 and claims the conference title.

Jack DeTommaso (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Mariner goal scorers with four tallies, while sophomore
Landon Locke (Midlothian, Va.) recorded a team-high seven points on three goals and four assists. Senior
Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) also contributed three goals and an assist, as the trio accounted for 10 of the team's 12 goals on the afternoon.
Defensively, senior
Michael Valentine IV (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) paced the Mariners with a game-high four caused turnovers to go along with two ground balls. Sophomore
Tucker Kuhn (Towson, Md.) won 15-of-26 draws and collected a team-best nine ground balls. Sophomore
William Schipfer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added five ground balls and two caused turnovers, while senior
Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.) contributed two ground balls and a caused turnover. In goal, junior
Julian Garcia (Lakeway, Texas) made 10 saves over 60 minutes of action.
USMMA came out sharp in the opening half, scoring five times in the first quarter and adding three more in the second to take an 8-5 lead into halftime. DeTommaso and Locke set the tone early, combining for five first-half goals, while Barcus added two tallies to help the Mariners maintain control.
SUNY Maritime responded in the second half, using a four-goal third quarter to erase the deficit and take the lead. The teams traded goals in the final period, but the Privateers were able to hold a narrow edge down the stretch. USMMA continued to press late, generating multiple scoring chances in the closing minutes, but Maritime's defense and timely saves preserved the one-goal margin.
The Privateers were led by Ryan Hannaford, who earned Most Outstanding Player honors after scoring six goals and adding an assist. Nick Uzakewicz added five goals and three assists, while Christopher Laino controlled possession at the face-off X with 10 wins. Goalkeeper Cristian Scaffaro made 18 saves to help secure the championship victory.
