Baseball Takes Twin-Bill From St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn On Senior Day

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 11, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team swept a Skyline Conference doubleheader from St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Senior Day at Bartoszek Field, winning game one 11-5 and taking game two 16-5. The Mariners improve to 13-6 overall (6-0 Skyline), while the Bears fall to 1-14 (0-6 Skyline) with the losses.
 
Prior to the opener, Merchant Marine honored its four seniors – team manager Jakob Debus, relief pitcher Eddie Lippert (Deer Park, N.Y.), outfielder Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.), and closer Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.).
 
Game Links Game 1 Highlights
  • St. Joseph's-Brooklyn jumped out to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth.
  • The Mariners responded with a seven-run fourth inning to take control of the game. Sophomore Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) drove in the first run with an RBI double, followed by a two-run double from sophomore Ryan Melton (Newnan, Ga.) to cut the deficit to 5-3.
  • Junior Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) added an RBI single before sophomore Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) launched a three-run home run to give Kings Point a 7-5 lead.
  • The Blue and Gray added four more runs in the fifth inning as junior Davin Fulton (Houston, Texas) drew a bases-loaded walk, sophomore Braden Vazquez (Missouri City, Texas) delivered a two-run single, and Kruer added an RBI single to extend the lead to 11-5.
  • Kruer finished with two hits and a game-high four RBIs. Troutt also recorded two hits, while Melton and Vazquez drove in two runs and Chiappetti added an RBI. Both Melton and Chiappetti also scored twice each in the victory.
  • Sophomore Travis Campbell (Alba, Texas) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Freshman Luke Sems (Oronoco, Minn.) started and struck out two over 3.1 innings, while freshman Levi Reale (Woodbridge, Va.) and freshman Michael Brown (Dumfries, Va.) combined for two scoreless innings to close out the victory. 
Game 2 Highlights
  • Kings Point broke the game open with a 10-run third inning and went on to defeat St. Joe's, 16-5, in the mercy-shortened second game.
  • The Mariners opened the scoring in the second inning when Cahalan delivered an RBI double. They added another run on an RBI fielder's choice by freshman Drew Davis (Springboro, Ohio) that plated Cahalan.
  • After the Bears tied the game at 2-2 in the third, the Blue and Gray responded with a massive inning that featured 10 runs on 10 hits. During the rally, Cahalan recorded his second hit of the game with an RBI single to left field, marking the 100th hit of his career.
  • The inning also included a two-run home run by Fulton and an inside-the-park home run by sophomore Thomas Byrne (Mount Pleasant, S.C.).
  • Kings Point added three runs in the fourth inning and one more in the sixth to secure the 16-5 victory.
  • Cahalan led the Mariners with three hits and three runs scored, while Fulton drove in a team-high four runs. Vazquez finished with two RBIs.
  • Vazquez, Kruer, and Melton each recorded multi-hit performances as the Mariners totaled 18 hits in the game.
  • Troutt and Cahalan each recorded a stolen base.
  • Freshman Baxter Hamilton (Sugar Land, Texas) earned the win, tossing six innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out seven.

Merchant Marine returns to the diamond tomorrow, Sunday, April 12, when they travel to the Bronx to take on Skyline rival SUNY Maritime. First pitch of the conference doubleheader is scheduled for noon at the Privateers' Reinhart Field.
