Â
The opening quarter was tightly contested, with both teams trading goals throughout. After Coast Guard struck first, the Mariners responded with consecutive tallies from DeTommaso and Sullivan to take the lead. The Bears answered with a man-up goal to even things up, and the back-and-forth continued as Badeer scored off a feed from DeTommaso to restore the advantage. Coast Guard added a late goal from long distance in the final seconds of the period, sending the game into the second quarter tied at 3-3.
Â
The second quarter proved to be the turning point. USMMA erupted for a 7-1 run, beginning with an early strike from DeTommaso and followed by a stretch where Locke, Mangus and Badeer all contributed. Locke sparked the surge with back-to-back goals, and the Mariners closed the half with two goals in the final 21 seconds from Badeer and Sullivan to take a commanding 10-4 lead into the break.
Â
Out of halftime, the Mariners continued to control the tempo early in the third quarter, extending the lead to 12-4 behind goals from Badeer and DeTommaso. Coast Guard began to find some rhythm late in the period, scoring three times over a five-minute stretch to cut into the deficit, but USMMA's defense limited further damage and maintained a five-goal cushion entering the fourth.
Â
The Bears made their push in the final quarter, capitalizing on extra-man opportunities to chip away at the lead. Coast Guard scored three times in the period, including two man-up goals, but the Mariners responded at a key moment when Badeer finished off an assist from DeTommaso early in the fourth to halt the momentum. From there, USMMA's defense tightened, forcing turnovers and controlling possessions down the stretch to secure the 13-10 victory despite the late pressure.
Â
USMMA finished with advantages in shots (50-35), shots on goal (26-17), ground balls (32-24), and face-offs (14-11), reinforcing the story of the night: a decisive second-quarter run followed by a composed defensive effort to close out the game.
Â
Coast Guard was led offensively by Patrick Smith, who recorded four goals, while Noah Heller added three points on two goals and one assist. At the face-off X, Mason Tucker won 11 draws, and the Bears' two goalies, Brett Tobasky and Dustin Miller, combined for 13 saves in the loss.
Â
The Mariners return to action this Saturday, March 28, when they travel out to Patchogue, N.Y., to open Skyline Conference action at St. Joseph's-Long Island. Opening face-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Golden Eagles' Danzi Stadium.
