BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (March 21, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's tennis opened the 2026 season with a Skyline Conference victory on the road up at Sarah Lawrence College, defeating the Gryphons 6-1 at the SLC Courts.

The Mariners swept doubles action to earn the first point of the match. The top pairing of sophomores Fredrich Buquel (Mission, Texas) and Aaron Zhao (Temple City, Calif.) won 6-2, before the #3 duo of freshmen Travis Boyd (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Travis Filer (Conroe, Texas) also came out on top 6-2 to clinch that doubles point. The second-flight pair of freshmen Zach Diep (Oxnard, Calif.) and Keegan Dutton (Temple, Texas) closed out action with a 6-4 victory.
 
Three of the six singles flights went beyond two sets. Boyd was first off the court at #6 with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Filer was not far behind with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win at #5 before Zhao clinched the entire match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 three-set victory at #2.
 
At #1, Buquel came back after losing the first set to earn a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win. The Gryphons got their only point of the match at #3, but Dutton closed out the day with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at #4.
 
The Mariners return to action this coming Tuesday, March 24, when they play host to Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary for a match beginning at 4 p.m. at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
