Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Brooklyn In Home-Opener

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 4, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team picked up a straight-set victory in its 2025 home-opener on Thursday night at Liebertz Gymnasium, defeating Brooklyn College, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-19). With the win, the Mariners improve to 3-1, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-1.
 
Match Links Sophomore Maddie Mayer (Centennial, Colo.) registered nine kills and a match-high six total blocks (three solo, three assists) to lead the Mariners at the net. Freshman Carly Soboloski (Peoria, Ariz.) also tallied nine kills to tie for the match-high and collected 18 digs. Sophomore Sydney Douglas (Herndon, Va.) contributed six kills and 12 digs, while classmate Jenny Dyke (Grand Rapids, Mich.) also chipped in six kills to go along with a .200 hitting percentage.
 
Junior setter Alexa Tipps (Palmdale, Calif.) directed the attack with 28 assists and added eight digs and senior libero Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) led all players in the match with 20 digs.
 
Set 1 – USMMA 25, Brooklyn 13: Merchant Marine opened the night on a strong note, jumping out to a 12-5 lead behind two aces from Soboloski and kills by Erin Stillinger and Douglas. The Mariners maintained control the rest of the way, closing out the set on a 6-2 run capped by a Mayer kill.
 
Set 2 – USMMA 25, Brooklyn 20: The Bulldogs hung close early and trailed just 16-15, but USMMA answered with a 5-1 spurt keyed by Mayer at the net. The hosts held off a late Brooklyn push and secured the two-set lead after another kill from Soboloski.
 
Set 3 – USMMA 25, Brooklyn 19: The final frame was tight at 14-13 before the Mariners pulled away with a 7-2 run, featuring back-to-back kills from Dyke and Mayer. USMMA closed out the sweep with an 8-4 finish.
 
As a team, Merchant Marine registered 36 kills, 34 assists, nine service aces, 67 digs and eight total blocks, hitting .126 on the night. Brooklyn finished with 20 kills, 19 assists, three aces, 57 digs and five blocks, while hitting -.035.
 
For the Bulldogs, Olive Carroll led with six kills and 10 digs, while Saule Okeke-Ziburkus added five kills and eight digs. Setter Amra Mulic recorded eight assists and 12 digs, and Danielle Fuxman chipped in three kills.
 
The Mariners return to action on Tuesday night, Sept. 9, when they host arch-rival Coast Guard. First set is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Liebertz Gymnasium.
