KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 27, 2025) – The senior class reached the 100-win milestone as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Mount Saint Vincent. The Mariners registered a 6-4 victory in the opener before exploding for a 10-run fifth as part of a 16-2 win in game two. USMMA improved to 22-13 (12-4 Skyline), while UMSV dropped to 16-17 (7-11 Skyline).

Game 1
Trailing 3-0 after three innings, USMMA put up a four-spot in the fourth and went on to defeat UMSV, 6-4. Freshman
Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) and sophomore
Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) had two RBI apiece, while senior
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Senior
Jacob Syversen (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) allowed three runs in 5.0 innings of work for the win.

UMSV grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second as a leadoff walk set the table for a one-out RBI double. The Dolphins added two more runs in the third as a sacrifice fly and a two-out RBI single made it 3-0.

USMMA broke through in the fourth and took the lead with a four-run frame. Sophomore
Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) led off with a single before consecutive walks to sophomore
Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) and senior
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) loaded the bases with no outs. Kruer followed with a two-run single and Gamez put the Mariners on top, 4-3, with a two-out, two-run triple.

The Dolphins, however, took advantage of an error to tie the game at 4-4 with an unearned run in the fifth.

The Mariners then retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Millen led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch before a Chiappetti RBI single put USMMA up, 5-4.

USMMA made it 6-4 with another run in the sixth as Gamez walked and sophomore
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) singled to set the table for a Millen RBI single.

Junior
Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.) struck out two batters in a scoreless seventh for the save.

Game 2
Five players registered multi-RBI games and the Mariners put up a 10-spot in the fourth to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 16-2 win. Clapsaddle finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, four RBI and two runs, while Millen went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, four RBI and two runs. Senior
Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) added three RBI, Troutt was 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Kruer went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two RBI and two runs. Chiappetti struck out five and allowed just two unearned runs in 6.0 innings of work for the win.

Chiappetti worked a 1-2-3 first before the USMMA offense plated four runs in the bottom of the inning. Troutt and Chiappetti worked back-to-back one-out walks before Clapsaddle put the Mariners on the board with a two-run triple. Heck and Kruer followed with back-to-back RBI singles and USMMA quickly led, 4-0.

After another 1-2-3 frame from Chiappetti in the second, the Mariners extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the frame as Heck worked a walk with the bases loaded.

Chiappetti eventually retired the first eight batters he faced before surrendering a two-out single in the third. The righty walked the next batter, but ended the inning with a flyout.

Kruer then launched a solo home run with two outs in the fourth to give the Mariners a 6-0 lead.

Chiappetti worked another 1-2-3 frame in the fifth before the Mariners sent 15 men to the plate as part of a 10-run outburst in the bottom of the inning. After Cahalan led off with a single, Millen followed with an RBI triple and Troutt added an RBI single for an 8-0 lead. Chiappetti reached on a fielder's choice before Clapsaddle roped an RBI double to center and Heck made it 10-0 with a sacrifice fly. Kruer was then plunked and freshman
Braden Vazquez (Missouri City, Texas) added an RBI single before Cahalan reached on an infield single to load the bases. Millen promptly cleared the bases with a three-run double, and both Troutt and Clapsaddle added RBI singles to make it a 16-0 ballgame.

UMSV plated a pair of unearned runs in the sixth for the final margin.

The Mariners travel to Farmingdale State for a Skyline doubleheader on Saturday, May 3, at noon.
