KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 22, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team sent 10 men to the plate as part of a six-run fifth inning and defeated John Jay, 13-5, in non-conference action at Bartoszek Field. USMMA improved to 20-11, while John Jay fell to 12-13.

Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) finished 1-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs, while
Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) was 2-for-6 with three RBIs. Freshman
Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, and sophomore
Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) was 1-for-2 with four walks, two runs and one RBIs.

The Bloodhounds grabbed a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first, but USMMA took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) set the table with a leadoff triple and sophomore
Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) tied the game with a one-out RBI single. Chiappetti then stole second and took third on a wild pitch before scoring on a balk as the Mariners went up, 2-1.

USMMA extended its lead to 3-1 in the second after Clapsaddle was plunked with the bases loaded and two outs.

After back-to-back one-out doubles helped John Jay pull to within 3-2 in the top of the third, USMMA promptly made it a 4-2 ballgame in the bottom of the frame as Troutt worked a two-out, bases-loaded walk.

John Jay then strung together three-consecutive, one-out singles to cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth, but the Mariners broke the game open with a six-run fifth. Millen and Troutt started things with back-to-back one-out singles before Chiappetti walked to load the bases. Clapsaddle then cleared the bases with a three-run triple that gave USMMA a 7-3 lead. Gamez followed with an RBI bunt single before Kruer made it a 10-3 ballgame with a two-run, inside-the-park home run to right center.

The Bloodhounds later loaded the bases with one out in the seventh before a wild pitch plated one run and an RBI single made it a 10-5 game.

USMMA tacked on three more runs in the eighth for the final margin. After the Mariners loaded the bases with no outs, sophomore
Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) lifted a sacrifice fly to right. Gamez then made it 13-5 with a two-out, two-run single up the middle.

The Mariners host a Skyline doubleheader against St. Joseph's-Long Island on Saturday, April 26, at noon.
