Notebaert Becomes Winningest Coach In KP Athletics History As Mariners Sweep DH At Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 17, 2025) – Head coach Michael Notebaert became the winningest coach in KP Athletics history as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team swept a Skyline doubleheader at Old Westbury. The Mariners cruised to a 9-2 triumph in the opener, a victory that moved Notebaert into the top spot with his 317th all-time win at KP. USMMA later added a 13-0 victory in a seven-inning game two. USMMA improved to 18-11 (10-2 Skyline), while Old Westbury dropped to 11-13 (2-8 Skyline).

Game Links Game 1
Junior Ryan Felton (Granbury, Texas) retired the first 14 batters of the game and went the distance as the Mariners registered a 9-2 victory in game one. Felton (4-3) struck out five in 7.0 innings of two-run ball for the win. Senior Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) finished 1-for-4 with a three-run home run, while classmate Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

USMMA needed just three batters to grab a lead in the top of the first. After sophomore Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) doubled to left with one out, Chiappetti promptly put the Mariners up, 1-0, with an RBI single.

Felton tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the first and the USMMA offense went right back to work in the second. Back-to-back, one-out singles by sophomore Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) and freshman Louis Inserra (Coplay, Pa.) set up runners on the corners before freshman Braden Vazquez (Missouri City, Texas) made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.

Following another 1-2-3 frame from Felton in the second, the Mariners manufactured a run in third. Troutt led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and took third on a flyout. Troutt then scored on a wild pitch and the Mariners led, 3-0.

Felton made it nine-straight with a 1-2-3 third before the Mariners tacked on three more runs in the fourth after freshman Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) and Olivares led off with consecutive singles. A sacrifice bunt set up runners on second and third with one out before Millen came through with a two-out, two-run single. Millen then stole second and came around to score on a throwing error as the Mariners took a 6-0 lead.

Felton worked another 1-2-3 frame in the fourth, eventually retiring the first 14 batters of the game before allowing three-consecutive two-out singles in the fifth. The third single plated a run for the Panthers and made it a 6-1 ballgame.

The Panthers added another run in the sixth as a leadoff double and a two-out RBI single brought Old Westbury to within 6-2.

USMMA scored three more runs in the seventh. After Chiappetti extended the inning with a two-out double, senior Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) worked a walk and Heck launched a three-run homer to put the Mariners up, 9-2.

Felton wrapped up the complete game with another 1-2-3 frame in the seventh.

Game 2
The Mariners scored 10 runs in the first four frames and finished off the doubleheader sweep with a 13-0 victory in seven innings. Chiappetti went 2-for-3 with four RBI and also earned the win after striking out five in 5.0 scoreless innings. Millen, meanwhile, finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and four runs.

The Mariners quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of first on sacrifice flies by Chiappetti and Heck.

USMMA plated three more runs in the third. After Millen set the table with a leadoff single, Troutt was plunked before a double steal set up runners on second and third with one out. Clapsaddle followed with a two-run single and Kruer made it a 5-0 ballgame with a two-out RBI single.

The Mariners then sent 10 men to the plate as part of a five-run fourth inning. Inserra led off with a walk before Vazquez singled and Millen followed with a two-run single. Troutt kept the inning going with a walk and Chiappetti added a two-run single. Olivares later added a two-out RBI single as USMMA took a 10-0 lead.

USMMA scored again in the fifth after Millen set the table with a one-out double. Millen then stole second before Chiappetti made it 11-0 with a two-out RBI single.

The Mariners added another run in the sixth. After Kruer led off with a single, junior Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) singled to set up runners on the corners and a wild pitch made it 12-0.

A leadoff double and a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out in the seventh before a Cahalan RBI fielder's choice extended the USMMA lead to 13-0.

The Mariners host Saint Elizabeth in non-conference action at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21.
