Tennis Earns Second-Straight Win, Topples Manhattanville On The Road, 6-1

PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 1, 2025) – On Tuesday afternoon, the USMMA tennis team traveled up to Westchester County and defeated Skyline Conference opponent Manhattanville University, 6-1. The Mariners' second-straight victory improved their record to 2-1 (2-0 Skyline), while the Valiants fell to 2-5 (0-1 Skyline) in defeat.

Match Link Manhattanville only had five players available for the match, so just two doubles matches were played. The senior duo of RJ Novak (Yorktown, Va.) and Connor McQuade (Jacksonville, Fla.) earned a 7-5 victory at the top flight to clinch the doubled point, as sophomores Lena Lewis (Williamsburg, Va.) and Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) earned a walkover win at #3.

Novotny got the win at #6 singles without even playing. Freshman Fredrich Buquel (Mission, Texas) was the first Mariner to finish his match, earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the #5 flight, while classmate Aaron Zhao (Temple City, Calif.) reversed those scored for his straight-set triumph at #4, 6-1, 6-0, to put USMMA on the verge of clinching the match, 4-0.

After Manhattanville earned its point by winning at #1 singles, back-to-back victories by Novak at #3  (6-2, 6-3) and sophomore Brent Matthews (Falls Church, Va.) at #2 (6-3, 7-6) closed out the match.

Up next, the Mariners will play Yeshiva University in another Skyline Conference match this coming Sunday, April 6. That match will be played at the U.S. National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens. First serve of doubles competition is scheduled for 2 p.m.
