KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 22, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team narrowly lost at home on Saturday to visiting Western New England University, 12-9, at Brooks Stadium. The loss drops the Mariners to an even 3-3 on the season, while the Golden Bears improve to 3-5.

Owen Behr (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) tied for the game-high with five points, as he scored three goals and dished out two assists. Senior
Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) added four points on two goals and two helpers, while junior
Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) rounded out the Mariners' multi-point scorers by finding the back of the net twice. Senior
Michael Emerick (Damascus, Md.) and junior
William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) both scored one goal apiece and sophomore
Brendan Ring (Philadelphia, Pa.) had one assist.
Defensively junior
Michael Valentine IV (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) caused a game-best three turnovers, while sophomore
Jake Rossman (Apple Valley, Minn.) and freshman
William Schipfer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) both had two CTs each. Ring picked up a game-high six ground balls, while Schipfer and senior
Chris Neuman (South Huntington, N.Y.) both gobbled up four GBs apiece. Neuman and freshman
Tucker Kuhn (Towson, Md.) both one five face-offs each. In goal, sophomore
Julian Garcia (Lakeway, Texas) made four saves.
Shots were a dead-even 36 apiece, including 16 shots on goal each for both teams. The Golden Bears held a slight advantage in face-off wins (14-10) and saves (7-4) and held a 41-30 lead in ground balls.
The Mariners never led on the afternoon, but also never trailed by more than three goals. Western New England led nearly the entire first half and took a 6-4 advantage into the halftime break.
After USMMA scored the first two goals of the third quarter to tie the game up at 6, the Golden Bears strung together three-straight to take a 9-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Mariners came within one goal on two separate occasions in the final quarter, including a man-up tally by Collins that made it 10-9 with just 3:51 to play. Western New England added two more late goals to close out the scoring.
For WNEU, junior Jacob Roy tied Behr for the game-high with five points, three coming by way of goals and two assists. Seniors Jack Houlden and Griffin LaRochelle both picked up hat-tricks on the afternoon. Junior Chris Catuosco won 10-of-15 face-offs and picked up five ground balls to tie the game-high with Houlden and junior Jack Gara.
The Mariners are back in action on Tuesday night, March 25, when they travel up to New London, Conn., to take on arch-rival Coast Guard. First face-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Bears' Cadet Memorial Field.
