Defense Stands Tall In Final 10 Minutes As Mariners Win 21st-Straight, 68-62 In OT At Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2025) – The USMMA women's basketball forced Mount St. Mary to miss 14-striaght field goals and turn the ball over six times in the final 10 minutes of action to earn a big road win over their Skyline rivals, 68-62, in overtime at the Knights' Kaplan Center Gym. The victory was the Mariners' 21st-straigth and improved their record to 22-1 (19-0 Skyline), while MSMC fell to 14-9 (14-4 Skyline) in defeat.

Game Link Sophomore Emily Grasseler (Millbrook, N.Y.) led the Mariners with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while freshman Carolae Barton (Waldorf, Md.) had yet another double-double effort with 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Barton filled in the stat sheet with three blocks, two assists and two steals, with one of her blocks coming on a potential buzzer-beater by the Knights in the final second of regulation.

Junior Hannah Ramsden (Port Aransas, Texas) added 11 points and eight rebounds, while senior Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.) contributed nine points and seven boards and freshman Breanna Sommers drained eight points.

Neither team could muster up much offense after a layup by Mount St. Mary made it 58-55 Knights at 4:50 of the fourth quarter. The only field goal the rest of the way was a game-tying three-pointer by Ramsden with 2:19 remaining.

Grasseler got the scoring started in overtime with a layup right away to give the Mariners a lead that they would not relinquish. The Knights' cold shooting in overtime, combined with three turnovers helped Merchant Marine build up the six-point advantage the would go on to win by.

USMMA out-rebounded MSMC, 55-37, on the day.

For the Knights, Brianna Guglielmo led all players with 22 points and six steals. Sara Cashin chipped in with nine points and tied for the team-high with five rebounds.

The Mariners close out the regular season on Wednesday night, Feb. 19, when they play host to Mount St. Vincent for a 7 p.m. tip-off inside the Liebertz Gymnasium.
