Freshman
Jack Flannery (McKinney, Texas) led USMMA with 20 points, while sophomore
Colin Hart (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) added 11. Classmate
Tim Barton (Waldorf, Md.) brought down a game-high 11 rebounds, while also scoring seven points and dishing out a game-best four assists.
Brooklyn opened the night with a 14-0 run fueled by early second-chance points and back-to-back threes, forcing an early timeout before Hart, Flannery, and freshman
Richard Sykes Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) chipped away from the perimeter. Merchant Marine settled in as Hart buried consecutive threes and Sykes added a jumper to pull within three, while senior
Clark Castleberry (Reston, Va.) and freshman
Noah Brown (Hedgesville, W.Va.) contributed inside to keep the game tight late in the half. A Barton three in the final minutes cut the deficit to one, but Brooklyn hit a three and converted a free throw just before the break and took a 27-26 lead into halftime.
Merchant Marine briefly closed the margin early in the second half behind a Flannery three and a layup by sophomore
Aaron Zalescik (Lambertville, N.J.), but Brooklyn responded with a string of baskets to stretch the lead back to multiple possessions. Several empty trips, including blocked attempts at the rim, allowed Brooklyn to extend its advantage to double digits as turnovers began to pile up. Hart momentarily halted the run with a three, but the Bulldogs pushed the margin to 20 behind their transition scoring and accuracy from deep.
The Mariners continued to compete down the stretch, with Flannery generating points at the line and Hart finishing in transition as part of a late push that cut the deficit to single digits in the final minute. Brooklyn, however, protected the ball, hit timely free throws, and held on through the final possessions to secure the 64-58 result.
Merchant Marine shot 29.5% from the field and 26.9% from three, while Brooklyn finished at 36.1% overall and 38.1% from long range, creating the separation that held throughout the night. Both teams finished with 20 points in the paint, but Brooklyn held small advantages in points off turnovers (16-13) and second-chance scoring (10-8), while the Mariners' bench provided a 16-5 edge in reserve scoring. Brooklyn led wire-to-wire, building its largest margin at 23 midway through the second half before Merchant Marine narrowed the final margin in the closing minutes.
Brooklyn was led by Joe Charles, who led all players on the night with 30 points, including five 3-pointers, to go along with eight rebounds and five steals. Thomas Hall drained 10 points, while Tyler Gordon led the squad with 10 rebounds.
The Mariners return to action on Saturday, Dec. 6, when they play host to arch-rival Coast Guard in the second game of a doubleheader against the Bears with the women's game beforehand. Tip-off between the Kings Point men and the Bears is scheduled for 2 p.m.
