Men’s Basketball Falls To Host Statesmen On Day 1 Of Hobart Tourney

GENEVA, N.Y. (Nov. 21, 2025) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost on the road to Hobart College in the opening game of the 2025 Hobart Basketball Tournament on Friday evening, 91-54. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 1-2, while the Statesmen improve to 3-1 with the victory.

Game Link Sophomore Aaron Zalescik (Lambertville, N.J.) led the Mariners on the glass with a game-high nine rebounds to go along with seven points and a pair of steals. Sophomore Tim Barton (Waldorf, Md.) and sophomore Mason Lavergne (Baton Rouge, La.) each scored eight points, with Barton adding five rebounds, four blocks and two steals, while Lavergne contributed three assists. Freshman Aaron Braxton (San Antonio, Texas) provided a spark off the bench with nine points on 3-for-3 shooting from three-point range, and senior Clark Castleberry (Reston, Va.) added six points and three rebounds.

Hobart opened the game on a 5–0 run before Zalescik, Lavergne, and Barton answered with a series of free throws and a Lavergne three that briefly pushed the Mariners in front, 7–5. After several early ties, Hobart used a 12–2 stretch midway through the half to create separation, a run interrupted only by layups from Hart and freshman Jack van de Erve (Charleston, S.C.) that kept the margin within reach. A three from Braxton later trimmed the deficit to seven, but Hobart countered with another burst, pushing the lead into double digits at 30–20. Lavergne added a late basket in the final minute, but Hobart closed the period ahead 38–24.

Hobart opened the second half with a burst of pressure and quick scoring, pushing the margin past 20 before Zalescik, Lavergne, and Castleberry managed a few scattered baskets to stop individual runs. The Statesmen continued to capitalize on turnovers in transition, steadily extending the lead the rest of the way despite late threes from Braxton, freshman Jack Flannery (McKinney, Texas), and a jumper by van de Erve.

Monty Nedd led Hobart with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting while adding six rebounds and two steals. Harrison Muntner followed with 15 points, four boards and a team-high six assists, and Alex Moesch added 11 points with eight rebounds and three steals. Allen Mordi and Niko Lutz also reached double figures with 11 points apiece, while Mordi contributed eight rebounds.

The Mariners will play in the consolation game of the 2025 Hobart Basketball Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 22, against Fredonia. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Hobart's Bristol Gymnasium.
