Women’s Basketball Tops Manhattanville, 59-41, For 16th-Straight Win

PURCHASE, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team benefitted from a 17-0 edge in second chance points and defeated Manhattanville, 59-41, to register its 16th-straight win. USMMA improved to 17-1 (14-0 Skyline), while Manhattanville dropped to 11-5 (8-4 Skyline).
 
Game Link Sophomore Emily Grasseler (Millbrook, N.Y.) had a 21-point, 14-rebound double-double to lead the Mariners, while freshman Carolae Barton (Waldorf, Md.) added a 17-point, 17-rebound effort. The Mariners shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the floor and made 12-of-17 free throws (70.6 percent). USMMA also posted a +33 margin (58-25) in rebounds, including a 24-7 edge on the offensive glass.
 
Julie Debrocky scored a team-high 13 points to lead Manhattanville. The Valiants shot just 29.1 percent (16-of-55) from the floor and made just 4-of-22 3-pointers (18.2 percent).
 
A Barton layup gave USMMA its first lead of the game, a 6-4 advantage at 7:59. After the Valiants tied the game, a 3-pointer from junior Hannah Ramsden (Port Aransas, Texas) helped key a quick 6-1 spurt that put the Mariners up, 12-7, with 4:57 left. The USMMA lead eventually reached seven, but a pair of Manhattanville buckets in the final minute made it a 17-14 game after one quarter.
 
USMMA held a 19-16 lead at the 9:03 mark before taking control of the game with an 11-0 run that stretched the lead to 30-16 with just 3:16 left before the break. Barton converted a layup-and-one to start the rally and Grasseler finished it with a jumper. The Valiants answered with six-straight points and the Mariners took a 31-22 lead into halftime.
 
The Mariners still held a seven-point lead at the 7:14 mark before a Ramsden 3-pointer highlighted an 8-0 run that put USMMA up, 41-26, with 3:02 to go. Manhattanville ended the run with a 3-pointer and USMMA took a 41-30 advantage into the final quarter.
 
A Barton layup and a 3-pointer by senior Abby Stramski (Jones, Okla.) started things in the fourth as the USMMA lead quickly ballooned to 16, 46-30, with 8:35 remaining. The Valiants closed to within 12 before another 8-0 run gave the Mariners their largest lead of the game, a 58-38 advantage with just 1:43 to play.
 
The Mariners return home to host Purchase on Saturday, Feb. 1, at noon.
