KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 5, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team opened Skyline Conference play by sweeping a doubleheader against Yeshiva by scores of 29-1 and 13-3. USMMA improved to 10-8 (2-0 Skyline) on the season, while Yeshiva fell to 0-16 (0-10 Skyline).

Game 1
The Mariners plated 11 runs in the third and scored at least one run in each inning. Junior
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) finished a single shy of the cycle, going 4-for-5 with one double, two triples and one home run to go along with six RBI and five runs scored. Junior
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) and classmate
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) each went 3-for-6 with three RBI, while senior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) went 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBI, three walks and four runs. Freshman
David Cherwonuk (Chattanooga, Tenn.) collected the win after striking out eight and allowing just one run in 4.0 innings of work.

USMMA took advantage of four walks and three extra-base hits to grab a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first. The Mariners extended their lead to 8-0 in the second inning by scoring four two-out runs.

Following a quick 1-2-3 inning by Cherwonuk, USMMA sent 15 men to the plate as part of an 11-run outburst in the third. Millen led off the inning with a single before Reistetter launched a two-run home run to right field. After Clapsaddle was plunked, Leatherwood made it 12-0 by blasting a two-run home run of his own. Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.), and freshman
Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) each added RBI singles before Leatherwood added an exclamation point on the frame with a two-run triple that made it 19-0.

USMMA added a run in the fourth, but Yeshiva answered in the bottom of the inning with a run that made it 20-1.

An error, a balk a passed ball and a wild pitch helped the Mariners grab a 23-1 lead with three runs in the fifth despite registering just one hit in the frame.

After a Leatherwood RBI triple highlighted a three-run sixth, a leadoff double and four-straight one-out singles helped USMMA add three more runs in the seventh for the final 29-1 margin.

Game 2
           Leatherwood finished 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored to lead USMMA. Junior
Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) went 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, while Reistetter added a double, a triple and an RBI as part of a 2-for-5 performance. Millen, Chiappetti and freshman
Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) added two RBI apiece. Junior
Michael Monkevich (Gaithersburg, Md.) earned the win after surrendering two runs and striking out four in 4.0 innings.

The Mariners scored twice in the top of the first, plating both runs on the same passed ball.

After a quick 1-2-3 frame by Monkevich, USMMA tacked on three more runs in the second as a two-out, two-run triple by Chiappetti was immediately followed by a Reistetter RBI triple that made it a 5-0 game.

Monkevich worked another 1-2-3 frame in the second before the Mariners made it 8-0 with three more runs in the third. Heck tripled in the frame, while Garner doubled and Millen collected a two-run single.

The first three batters reached in the fourth as USMMA increased its lead to 10-0. Clapsaddle led off with a walk before Leatherwood roped an RBI triple to right and Heck promptly followed with an RBI single.

Yeshiva answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth as a walk, a single and a two-run double made it 10-2.

After the Mariners strung together three-straight one-out singles to plate three runs in the sixth, Yeshiva scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the frame for the final 13-3 score.
