KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 16, 2024) - The USMMA baseball team saw its 13-game winning streak come to an end tonight with a 6-5 loss to the Bard College Raptors at Bartoszek Field. With the win, the Raptors snapped their 17-game losing streak to improve to 5-20 while the Mariners dropped to 17-9 in defeat.
After the Raptors took an early 3-0 lead, the Mariners' offense fought back. An RBI triple from junior
Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) got the Mariners on the board in the bottom of the second. Bard got the run back in the top of third, but USMMA's bats responded with a flurry in the bottom of the inning. A two-run triple by freshman
Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) pulled Kings Point within a run at 4-3. Gamez came into score the tying run one batter later when senior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) produced an RBI groundout.
Bard bounced back by scoring twice in the sixth to take a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish. Senior
Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.)Â knocked in a run with an RBI single in the eighth inning to bring the Mariners within a run at 6-5, but the Raptors escaped further damage and went on to claim the victory.
Garner went 2-for-4 with an RBI single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and raise his team-high batting average to .359 for the season. Over his hitting streak, Garner is hitting an even .500 at 16-for-32. To boot, Garner has driven in a run in three of his last four games.Â
Prior to the contest, the baseball team honored LCDR Antoinette Waller as she threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Merchant Marine will be back in action on Saturday, April 20 under the Throgs Neck Bridge to take on SUNY Maritime in a doubleheader. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Reinhart Baseball Field.
