Women’s Lacrosse Drops Final Spring Break Game To Connecticut College In Maryland

SPARKS, Md. (March 12, 2024) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team concluded its Spring Break trip with a 17-3 loss to Connecticut College in a neutral-site game played at Tierney Field on the complex of the USA Lacrosse Headquarters near Baltimore. The Mariners' record drops to 2-2 on the season, while the Camels improve to 2-2 as well.
 
Game Link A pair of plebes recorded multi-point games for Merchant Marine, as Grace Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa.) scored twice, while Leslie Wysong (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) found the back of the net once and dished out one assist. They both picked up four ground balls apiece. Junior Lauren Jablonowski (Levittown, N.Y.) also found the scoresheet with an assist.
 
Defensively, sophomore Nicole Nagengast (Seaford, N.Y.) tied for the game-high with three caused turnovers, while her classmate, goalie Karianna Eagle (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), made seven saves and tied for the game-high with five ground balls.
 
The Camels scored the first two goals of the game before Picozzi cut the Mariners' deficit in half with her ninth goal of the season at 6:30 off a feed from Wysong. Conn. College went on to score the next seven goals to lead 9-1 early in the third quarter.
 
USMMA scored two of the next three goals late in the third, as the Camel's 10th tally was sandwiched between Wysong's third of the year (assisted by Jablonowski) and Picozzi's team-leading 10th of the season while Connecticut College down a player due to a yellow card. The Camels finished the contest with a 7-0 run.
 
For Conn. College, sophomore Kate Coughlin led all players with five points on three goals and two assists. A trio of Camels produced three-point games – senior Janet Howard (3G), junior Aine Downey (1G, 2A) and sophomore Campbell Johnston (1G, 2A). Junior Sydney Weber secured a game-high 11 draw controls and senior Violette Nidds turned aside three Mariner shots to earn the victory between the pipes.
 
The Mariners return to action on Saturday, March 23, when they travel to Gwynedd Mercy in Pennsylvania for their final non-conference game of the year before Skyline action begins the following week. Opening draw is scheduled for 12-noon at the Griffins' Athletic Complex. Live stats for the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
