Mariners Defeat Farmingdale State Behind Strong Second-Half Effort

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 7, 2024) – The USMMA women's basketball team used a second-half surge to power past Farmingdale State 57-45 in Skyline Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners recorded their fifth straight victory, improving to 6-1 (5-0 Skyline), while the Rams dropped to 5-4 (3-2 Skyline).
 
Game Links Junior Hannah Ramsden (Port Aransas, Texas) recorded a game-high 26 points, with 24 of them coming in the second half and 18 of those 24 coming in the fourth quarter alone. Ramsden also nailed a game-best six three-pointers, tying a career-best. Sophomore Emily Grasseler (Millbrook, N.Y.) posted her fourth straight double-double and team-leading sixth of the season, ripping down a team-high 13 rebounds while chipping in with 10 points. Senior Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.) distributed a game-best five assists and added 10 points.
 
Freshman Carolae Barton (Waldorf, Md.) grasped 13 rebounds and tied Ramsden with a game-best four steals and two blocks.
 
The Rams scored seven of the first nine points of the first quarter, building a 7-2 advantage on a pair of free throws from Erin Conte at 5:06. Grasseler connected on back-to layups at 4:47 and 4:08 to get the Mariners within on 7-6 before Farmingdale State closed the period on an 8-2 run to lead 15-8. The Rams would build their lead to 10, 27-17, its largest of the afternoon at the 4:26 mark of the second quarter on a jumper from Alexandria Walbroehl before the Kings Points scored the last four points on a Barton layup at the 1:45 mark and a pair of Ramsden free throws to cut the deficit to six, 27-21 going into the halfway point.
 
Merchant Marine came out firing in the third quarter with a 10-2 run to retake the lead for the first time since the 9:42 mark of the first quarter, 31-29 on a Ramsden trey at 4:09, and registered four of the final six points to take a 35-31 lead into the final quarter of play. The Mariners would not look back in the fourth quarter, building their advantage to 15, 52-37 on a Ramsden three-pointer at 2:22 and rolling to a 57-45 victory.
 
Taneece Wooden posted a double-double, dropping a team-high 21 points and grabbing 10 boards. Walbroehal hauled down a game-high 15 rebounds while Erin Conte tied a game-best with four steals.
 
The Mariners return to action this Wednesday, Dec. 11, on the road in Skyline Conference action against St. Joseph's-L.I. out in Patchogue, Suffolk County.
