It was just the fourth time in 17 games this season that USMMA allowed multiple goals in a game. Senior
Margaret Ripperger (McKinney, Texas) made two saves for the Mariners and Hailey Stork also had two stops for the Rams. Each team totaled nine shots with the Rams holding a 4-2 edge in shots-on-goal.
Throw-ins dominated the early action and neither team registered a shot until the 11th minute when the USMMA defense blocked an attempt by the Rams.
Farmingdale State missed high with a chance in the 13th minute before the Mariners registered the game's first shot-on-goal in the 15th minute, but the attempt from distance by sophomore
Ainsley Carlon (Gilbert, Ariz.) was saved.
Senior
Natalie Colpoys (Rochester, N.Y.) missed wide left in the 23rd minute before an effort from junior
Marina Ronzoni (Riverhead, N.Y.) missed wide right in the 24th minute.
Free kicks and more throw-ins followed as both teams struggled to maintain possession. After the Rams missed high in the 27th minute, freshman
Jayme Santasiero (Houston, Texas) had a shot blocked in the 33rd minute.
The Mariners had one final chance right at the 44-minute mark, but freshman
Sarah Welsch (Broomfield, Colo.) missed high and the game remained scoreless at halftime with the teams combining for just one shot-on-goal.
The action picked up to start the second half as Santasiero had a shot stopped in the 46th minute before Ripperger was tested for the first time and saved a shot in the 48th minute.
A USMMA foul in the 59th minute, however, set up a free kick that the Rams converted for a 1-0 advantage. The left-footed effort from 20-yards out curled around the defensive wall and skipped past Ripperger.
The Rams quickly tried to add on to their lead, but Ripperger turned away an attempt in the 60th minute.
An attempt by Ronzoni missed high later in the 60th minute before a shot from freshman
Lucy Thomas (Alexandria, Va.) in the 68th minute also missed high.
A USMMA turnover right at the edge of the 18-yard box created a one-on-one with the keeper and the Rams took advantage to grab a 2-0 lead in the 73rd minute.
Sophomore
Faith Sammons (Aubrey, Texas) had what proved to be the final USMMA attempt of the game in the 77th minute, but the shot was blocked.
