NEW YORK (Nov. 20, 2024) – A game-opening 14-0 run set the tone as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team opened Skyline play with a 68-48 road victory against Yeshiva. USMMA improved to 2-1 (1-0 Skyline), while Yeshiva fell to 0-2 (0-1 Skyline).

Emily Grasseler (Millbrook, N.Y.) finished with 15 points and nine rebounds to pace the Mariners, while freshman
Carolae Barton (Waldorf, Md.) made 7-of-9 field goals as part of a 14-point, eight-rebound performance. Senior
Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) finished 3-of-4 from long range to also contribute 14 points. USMMA shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the floor and posted a 32-4 edge in points in the paint.

Shai Rahamim scored 15 points to pace Yeshiva, which shot just 32.6 percent (15-of-46) from the floor.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Jackson to open the game helped the Mariners jump out to a 14-0 lead at the 5:15 mark in the first quarter. Yeshiva scored the next five points before a 3-pointer from freshman
Breanna Sommers (Casa Grande, Ariz.) opened a 6-0 run that pushed the lead to 20-5 with just 1:30 to play.

Yeshiva closed to within eight before Jackson buried her third 3-pointer of the game and a Barton layup extended the lead back to 13, 25-12. Yeshiva had an answer again, this time using a 7-0 run to trim the USMMA lead to just 25-19 at the 5:24 mark. The teams traded baskets before a 3-pointer brought Yeshiva to within 27-24. After the Mariners responded with a 9-0 run that pushed the advantage back to 12 points, another Yeshiva 3-pointer made it 36-27 at halftime.

An 11-0 run to open the third quarter proved decisive as USMMA saw its lead climb to 47-27 by the 6:22 mark. The Mariners would lead by as many as 21 in the quarter.

USMMA led 60-38 with 7:14 to play in the game before a Grasseler free throw capped a quick 5-0 spurt that gave the Mariners their largest lead of the contest, a 65-38 advantage at the 4:00 mark.

The Mariners return home to host Old Westbury on Saturday, Nov. 23, at noon.
