KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 28, 2023) – Junior
Kole Register (Virginia Beach, Va.) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of a 2-0 game two victory as the USMMA baseball team bounced back from a 2-1 defeat in game one to split a pair of pitching duels against Mount Saint Vincent. USMMA moved to 20-12 (8-6 Skyline), while Mount Saint Vincent moved to 20-12 (9-5 Skyline).
Game 1
USMMA held a 1-0 lead through four innings, but CMSV plated a pair of runs in the fifth and held on for a 2-1 win. Sophomore
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while senior
Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) was 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead USMMA. Junior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) had eight strikeouts and surrendered two runs in 7.0 innings of work.
Â
The Dolphins threatened in the first as a one-out single and a double set up runners on second and third, but Reistetter escaped with back-to-back strikeouts.
Â
USMMA then threatened in the second and was able to capitalize to take an early lead. Chambers and sophomore
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) led off with back-to-back singles before Leatherwood made it a 1-0 ballgame with a one-out RBI single up the middle.
Â
Reistetter had two strikeouts in a quick 1-2-3 fourth before CMSV rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth. Three-straight singles opened the frame and leveled the score before a run-scoring 4-6-3 double play allowed the Dolphins to grab a 2-1 lead.
Â
Freshman
Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) extended his hitting streak to 25 games with a leadoff single in the seventh, but was erased on a fielder's choice and the Dolphins retired the next two batters to end the game.
Â
Game 2
Register pitched into the ninth after tossing 7.1 no-hit innings and the Mariner offense did just enough to secure a 2-0 win. Register surrendered two hits, while walking two and striking out seven. Sophomore
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) finished 1-for-4 with two RBI, while freshman
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Â
Register worked 1-2-3 innings in the first and second, eventually retiring the first seven before an error gave the Dolphins a baserunner. A lineout double play, however, allowed Register to face the minimum through three innings.
Â
After another 1-2-3 inning for Register in the fourth, USMMA threatened in the bottom of the frame as Chambers laced a one-out triple to the gap in left center. Chambers would end up stranded as the next two batters were retired and the game remained scoreless through four.
Â
A leadoff walk led to a runner on third situation with one out in the fifth for the Dolphins, but Register escaped with back-to-back strikeouts.
Â
Register tossed another 1-2-3 frame in the sixth before USMMA broke through in the bottom of the inning for the game's first run. Senior
Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) set the table with a leadoff triple to the right center gap and Millen promptly followed with an RBI groundout to put the Mariners up, 1-0.
Â
Register held the Dolphins hitless once again in the seventh and retired the leadoff man in the eighth before CMSV collected its first hit of the game, a clean single up the middle.
Â
The Mariners then added an important insurance run in the eighth. After leading off the frame with a single, Cahalan stole second and took third on a wild pitch before a Millen RBI single made it a 2-0 ballgame.
Â
Register took the mound in the ninth, but was lifted after surrendering a leadoff single. Freshman
Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.) came on and got a strikeout and a game-ending lineout double play to secure his fifth save.
Â
USMMA returns to action on April 30, hosting Manhattanville for a Skyline doubleheader at noon. Live stats and live video will be available on USMMASports.com with links on
