PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 22, 2023) – Senior
Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) had two home runs, including a grand slam, and eight RBI in a 21-6 game two rout as the Mariners bounced back from a 5-4 loss in game one to split a Skyline doubleheader against Purchase. USMMA moved to 16-11 (5-5 Skyline), while Purchase moved to 13-15 (5-5 Skyline).
Freshman
Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) hit safely in both games to extend his hitting streak to 21 games.
Game 1
A four-run first put USMMA in an early hole and the Mariners could not complete the comeback in a 5-4 loss. Junior
Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI for USMMA, while Darling finished 1-for-3 with a two-run home run. Freshman
Ryan Felton (Granbury, Texas) racked up nine strikeouts, while surrendering just one run in 5.2 innings of relief.
Purchase put together a big inning in the bottom of the first as a three-run home run highlighted a four-run frame.
The Mariners answered quickly with a home run of their own to cut the deficit in half in the top of the second. After a one-out single by sophomore
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.), Darling promptly launched a two-run homer to left center to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
USMMA pulled to within 4-3 in the fifth after taking advantage of an error. Garner singled with one out before advancing all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Freshman
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) followed with an RBI groundout.
The Panthers, however, responded to go up 5-3 in the sixth courtesy of a two-out RBI single.
The Mariners used their own two-out rally in the seventh to add one run before stranding the tying run at second. Following two quick outs, sophomore
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) extended the inning with a double. Garner followed with an RBI double that made it 5-4, but Purchase used a game-ending strikeout to hold on to the win.
Game 2
Eight players registered multi-hit games as USMMA racked up a season-high 27 hits, including 11 for extra-bases, in a 21-6 game two victory. Zanetti finished 3-for-5 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and eight RBI, while senior
Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) was 4-for-6 with two home runs and five RBI. Junior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas), Clapsaddle and Darling each went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Sophomore
Michael Monkevich (Gaithersburg, Md.) allowed six runs, five earned, in a complete game effort.
The Panthers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of a three-run home run.
USMMA answered immediately, taking the lead with four runs in the top of the second. After a leadoff walk started things, Darling extended his hitting streak to 21 games with an RBI double. Another run scored on an error before Zanetti launched a two-run home run to put the Mariners up, 4-3.
Purchase promptly leveled the score with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, but the Mariners grabbed the lead right back as Chambers blasted a solo homer to put USMMA back on top, 5-4.
The Mariners created some breathing room with three more runs in the fourth. Cahalan opened the scoring with an RBI double, while
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) and Chambers each had RBI singles as USMMA grabbed an 8-4 lead.
The Panthers grabbed a run back with an RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth, but the Mariners blew the game open with eight runs in the fifth. Three-straight singles opened the frame and loaded the bases for Zanetti, who launched a grand slam to left field. Reistetter followed with an RBI double and Chambers had an RBI single before Clapsaddle added an RBI ground-rule double. USMMA loaded the bases once again for Zanetti, who drew a walk to give the Mariners a commanding 16-5 advantage.
Purchase grabbed a run back with a solo home run in the sixth, but USMMA put up another crooked number with a five-run seventh. Zanetti and Millen had consecutive RBI triples before Garner tacked on an RBI single. Chambers followed with a two-run homer for the final 21-6 margin.
