Game 1
The Mariners wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as they plated 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Â
Their first hit of the afternoon came off the bat off the number two hitter, sophomore
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.), who became the second Mariner this season to reach the 100-career hit plateau with his poke to right field.
Â
Merchant Marine had a trio of two-RBI hits in the opening frame by freshman
Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) with a double that scored two, and sophomore
Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) and senior
Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) both with singles that plated two each.
Â
In the bottom of the second, the Mariners scored six more times, highlighted by an inside-the-park grand slam by senior
Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.).
Â
For good measure, Zanetti led off the bottom of the third by speeding around the bases once again for another inside-the-park homer that made it 17-0 at the time. USMMA added four more in the third and led 21-0 after three.
Â
The Mariners tacked an additional three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to close out the scoring.
Â
Zanetti finished 5-for-7 with seven RBIs and five runs scored, while Darling and fellow plebe
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) both produced four-RBI efforts. Four other Mariners finished with two RBIs – Chambers, Heck and sophomores
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) and
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.). Millen and junior
Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.) also brought in one run apiece.
Â
Merchant Marine was quick on the base paths, as the Mariners finished with nine stolen bases in the contest.
Â
As impressive as the bats were, junior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) shined on the mound, pitching a complete-game three-hit shutout to improve to 2-1 on the season. He fanned 13 Maccabee batters.
Â
Game 2
The second game of the twin-bill was much of the same for USMMA, as they finished with 22 runs (for a total of 50 on the day).
Â
Chambers knocked in a team-high four with a two-run inside-the-park homer in the third and a two-RBI double in the sixth.
Â
Darling added three more RBIs in the nightcap, including two on a triple in the sixth, while Zanetti, Chambers and sophomore
Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.) all scored three times each. Other extra-base hits came off the bats of Leatherwood and Clapsaddle, who both had triples.
Â
Once again the Mariners swiped a ton of bases, as they were credited with 14 steals in the contest.
Â
On the mound, sophomore
Michael Monkevich (Gaithersburg, Md.) earned the victory after tossing three innings, allowing just three hits with one strikeout. Merchant Marine got three hitless innings of relief from sophomore
Jacob Syversen (Land O' Lakes, Fla.), freshman
Ryan Felton (Granbury, Texas) and junior
Jay Piotrowski (Montgomery, Texas), while freshman
Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.) finished the Macs off in the top of the seventh.
Â
Up next, the Mariners travel to arch-rival Coast Guard this coming Tuesday, March 28, for an afternoon-tilt with the Bears beginning at 3:30 p.m. up at USCGA's Nitchman Field. Live links for the game can be found on
