Men’s Basketball Suffers First Home Loss Of Season To Rival SUNY Maritime

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 8, 2023) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost to Skyline rival SUNY Maritime on Wednesday night, 63-47, inside a loud Liebertz Gymnasium. The defeat was the Mariners' first at home this season and dropped their record to 11-11 (9-4 Skyline), while the Privateers improved to 13-9 (9-4 Skyline) with the victory.

Game Link Three players scored in double-figures for the Mariners, led by junior Jake Hatch (Austin, Texas) with 12 points. Classmate DeMarcus Spivey (Ashburn, Va.) added 11 and sophomore Drew Zalescik (Lambertville, N.J.) drained 10 points. Hatch also led Merchant Marine with seven rebounds. Sophomores Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, N.J.) and Isaac Vencel (Bloomington, Ind.) contributed nine and five points, respectively, with Vencel also dishing out a game-high six assists.

The Mariners started hot, grabbing a seven-point lead, 9-2, after just five minutes, however the Privateers came back with a vengeance. The visitors went on a 22-6 run over the next 11-plus minutes to go up by nine points, 24-15, at 3:58. Maritime would take a nine-point lead, 28-19, into the locker room at halftime.

USMMA was able to cut the deficit down to just six points just under nine minutes into the second half, however that was the closest the Mariners would come the rest of the night. A 7-0 run by the Privateers quieted the O'Hara Hall crowd, and put SUNY Maritime into a double-digit lead that it did not relinquish.

For the Privateers, Ryan Donovan scored a game-high 25 points, while Tyler Anderson added 16. They both had seven rebounds apiece, but it was big-man Aleksandar Begovic who led all players on the night with 11 boards.

Up next, the Mariners host Sarah Lawrence College for a Skyline North Division clash this Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
