PURCHASE, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2023) – The USMMA men's basketball team dropped a low-scoring affair to Manhattanville, 58-44, at the Kennedy Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Merchant Marine fell to 12-12 (10-5 Skyline), while the Valiants improved to 18-6 (11-4 Skyline). Manhattanville moved into sole possession of first place in the North Division after Maritime's 65-60 loss to Mount Saint Mary this evening.

Despite the loss, there are positives the Mariners can take from this game. On the defensive end, USMMA kept themselves in the game in the first half. After the Valiants raced out to a 21-2 lead at the 11:28 mark, a timeout by head coach Rob Pryor rejuvenated his team's defense. The Mariners did not allow a single point for seven minutes and 38 seconds.
 
What's better, Merchant Marine did not allow a Manhattanville make from the field for a 10:41 stretch. This allowed the Mariners' offense to find its footing and go on a 12-0 run to cut the deficit to 21-14. Back-to-back threes from sophomores Brandon Allison (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, N.J.) kicked off the run.
 
It was a productive game for Robinson, who was the Mariners' leading scorer with 14 points thanks in large part to a 3-for-7 night from downtown. The sharpshooter is now averaging over 13 points per game in 10 games since the calendar turned to 2023.
 
Robinson was helped out in the three-point department by junior DeMarcus Spivey (Ashburn, Va.), who went 2-for-3 from distance tonight and finished with nine points.
 
USMMA will look to put the loss behind them and move forward to the regular season-finale against Mount Saint Mary scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium, with Senior Day festivities taking place prior to the action.
