KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2023) – The NEWMAC recently announced the postseason honors for the 2023 football season and a total of seven USMMA players were selected to the two All-NEWMAC Teams. Junior
Talsen Smith (Roseville, Calif.), senior
Nathan Mars (Scarborough, Maine) and junior
Jack Temple (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) earned First Team honors, while seniors
Ceaser Gonzalez (Norco, Calif.) and
Jacob Berault (Slidell, La.) along with junior
George Ethan Ferrey (Bethlehem, Pa.) and sophomore
Gervy Alota (San Diego, Calif.) all landed on the Second Team.

Smith earned All-NEWMAC Frist Team honors as a wide receiver. This is the third All-NEWMAC selection of his career, as he was named to the Second Team in 2021 and the First Team in 2022. The junior was the NEWMAC Offensive Athlete of the Week and also landed on the D3football.com Team of the Week after the Mariners' Week 8 win over WPI. Smith finished the season with 37 receptions for 730 yards and nine touchdowns. His 19.7 yards per reception currently ranks 25th in Division III.

Mars earned All-NEWMAC Frist Team honors as an offensive lineman. The Mariners' starting left guard was part of the O-Line that earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week after the Mariners' Week 11 win over Coast Guard. Over the course of the year, he earned a player grade of 99 and allowed zero sacks. The Merchant Marine offense averaged 345.7 yards per game, including 240.5 rushing yards per game, thanks to the work of Mars and the offensive line.

Temple earned All-NEWMAC First Team honors as a defensive lineman. The Mariners' starting defensive end was the NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week and landed on the D3football.com Team of the Week after the Mariners' Week 8 win over WPI. He finished the season with 46 tackles (26 solo and 20 assisted), including a team-best 15.5 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks. His 1.6 tackles for losses per game currently ranks 36th in the nation.

Gonzalez earned All-NEWMAC Second Team honors as a fullback. He was the NEWMAC Offensive Athlete of the Week twice this year (Week 1 and Week 7) and earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week after the Mariners' Week 1 win over WestConn. The senior amassed 993 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground while also catching one TD pass on the year. His 15 touchdowns currently rank 28th in the country, while he also ranks 31st in scoring (9.2 points per game) and 32nd in total points scored (92).

Berault earned All-NEWMAC Second Team honors as an offensive lineman. The Mariners' starting right tackle was part of the O-Line that earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week after the Mariners' Week 11 win over Coast Guard. The play of Berault and the offensive line helped lead the Merchant Marine offense to another high ranking in Division III, as the Mariners currently rank 11th in rushing offense in the country.

Ferrey earned All-NEWMAC Second Team honors as a punter. He was the NEWMAC Special Teams Athlete of the Week after the Mariners' Week 7 win over MIT. The NEWMAC leader with an average of 42.0 yards per punt, the junior amassed 1428 yards on 34 punts. He had three punts of 50 yards or more with a season-best of 67 yards. Ferrey also recorded five punts that pinned opponents back within their own 20 yard-line and had 11 punts go for fair catches and three for touchbacks.

Alota earned All-NEWMAC Second Team honors as an athlete. The sophomore quarterback registered 818 passing yards on 48-of-97 completions with eight touchdowns and just two interceptions. He finished the year with a QB rating of 143.41. Alota also gained 265 yards on the ground, while finding the end zone four times.
