Â
Game File
The Tomb Trophy will be an added incentive to the teams from both SUNY Maritime and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, as every sport will be represented and earn one point for each victory over their rival. The institution with the most points at the end of the school year will take home the Tomb Trophy. It is named in honor of Captain James Harvey Tomb, who has very important ties to both schools. Captain Tomb served as the superintendent of SUNY Maritime from 1927 until 1942, bringing the then-New York Maritime Academy from its location on a ship pier-side in New York Harbor to its current location at Fort Schuyler in the Bronx before being selected as the first ever superintendent of USMMA in 1942, overseeing the physical construction of the academy here at Kings Point.
Â
The Mariners were led by senior fullback
Matthew Savard (Orlando, Fla.), who rushed for 177 yards and found the end zone three times, including on the Mariners' opening drive. Merchant Marine totaled 495 rushing yards on the day and six of the Mariners' seven TDs were ran in, with the other coming on a 30-yard pass from senior
Jeremiah Wang (Manassas, Va.) to senior
Thomas Gehman (Valley Center, Calif.) in the second
Â
Wang found the end zone in himself on a 21-yard run in the second quarter, while senior
Max Michaels (Fleming Island, Fla.) and sophomore
Zach Zebro (East Brunswick, N.J.) both had rushing TDs, Michaels' from 17 yards out in the third quarter and Zebro's from six yards out in the fourth.
Â
The defense forced two fumbles, both by senior
Daniel Falzone (Medford, N.J.), and had multiple blocked kicks on the afternoon. Junior
Thomas Joyce (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore
Chad Hollar (Wilmington, N.C.) led the way with five tackles each, and the Mariners got sacks from senior
C.J. Mustain (Oro Valley, Ariz.) with 1.5 sacks and sophomore
C.J. Livesay (Morristown, Tenn.) with one.
