KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 5, 2022) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team lost an exciting non-conference home tilt to Western Connecticut State on Saturday at Tomb Field, 9-8, in overtime. The setback drops the Mariners to 2-1 on the year, while the Colonials remain undefeated at 3-0.

Neither team held a lead higher than two goals the entire afternoon, as WestConn led 2-1 after the first quarter, only to see the Mariners tally the only two goals of the second to take a 3-2 advantage into halftime.

After Merchant Marine opened the scoring in the third, the visitors produced four of the next five goals and led 6-5 after three. Both teams scored twice in the fourth – the first two by the Mariners and the next two by the Colonials, and neither could muster another down the stretch of regulation.

The Colonials won the opening draw of the first four-minute, sudden-victory overtime and held possession for the early part, barraging junior goalie
Samuel Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.) with shots, of which he made three saves, before the Mariners took over at 2:33.

WestConn wound up getting the ball back on an intercepted pass at 1:30 and, on their second shot 45 seconds later, found the back of the net for the game-winner.

Stephenson finished the game with an impressive 19 saves. Junior
Carter Hall (Annapolis, Md.) had a hat trick for the Mariners and four other players had multi-point days – sophomore
Dylan Lomelo (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) with two goals and senior
Zach Hasbrouck (Greenvale, N.Y.), sophomore
Erich Diehl (Long Valley, N.J.) and freshman
Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) with a goal and an assist each.

In the faceoff-X, freshman
Noah Lastner (Pasadena, Md.) won six faceoffs and classmate
Chris Neuman (South Huntington, N.Y.) had four wins in the X, while also picking up a team-high six groundballs.

Western Connecticut junior Trey Aronow and freshman Ryan Baudo both had a game-high four points each – Aronow on four goals, including the game-winner and Baudo on two goals and two assists. Junior Jonathan Russack-Baker won 10-of-18 faceoffs and picked up a game-high nine groundballs and sophomore goalie Brendan Grove made nine saves.
