Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Mariners Sail Past Ramapo, 20-7, At Home Tuesday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 22, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team defeated non-conference opponent Ramapo College, 20-7, at home on Tuesday night under the lights on Tomb Field. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 3-1 on the season, while the Roadrunners fall to 0-4 with the loss.

Game File Senior Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) tallied a game-high nine points with her second-straight eight-goal game to go along with one assist. Sophomore Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) recorded seven points on two goals and five helpers, while junior Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.) was right behind her with six, finding the back of the net four times and dishing out two assists.

Two other Mariners had multi-point nights – juniors Julia Coughlin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) (four goals) and Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) (one goal, one assist). Sheedy led all players with nine draw controls to go along with a team-high five groundballs, while also causing three turnovers. Senior Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) registered a game-high four caused turnovers and secured eight draw controls, and junior Hope Germanakos (Lynbrook, N.Y.) made four saves between the pipes in over 56 minutes of action to claim the victory.

After a slow start, the Mariners reached a 10-goal lead to maintain a continuously-running clock late in the second quarter. USMMA did a great job of securing possession throughout the night with a 19-10 advantage in draw controls.

Freshman Kelly Griffin led Ramapo with three goals, classmate Julianna McClain scooped up a game-high six groundballs and freshman goalie Alyssa Curto made five saves in the losing effort.

The Mariners won't be back in action for over a week, when they travel up to New London, Conn. for the second time this month to take on arch-rival Coast Guard next Wednesday, March 30. Opening draw against the Bears is scheduled for 7 p.m. at USCGA's Cadet Memorial Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
