Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. (Feb. 3, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost on the road at arch-rival Coast Guard, 85-59, on Thursday night. The defeat halts the Mariners' eight-game win-streak and drops their record to 16-4 overall, while the Bears improve to 11-6 on the season with the win.

Freshman Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) led Merchant Marine with 19 points, while senior Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) added 11 and classmate Madison Reddick (Baker, Mont.) had 10. Junior Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) recorded a game-high 14 rebounds for the Mariners.

Coast Guard shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the floor and connected on 9-of-26 from three-point range, while the Mariners were 20-of-65 from the floor (30.8%).

The Bears scored the first seven points of the game and raced out to a 12-2 lead in the first four minutes of play. Coast Guard led 25-16 after the first quarter.

The hosts led by as many 14 in the second quarter, 30-16, and held a 42-31 lead at halftime.

Merchant Marine cut the deficit down to six, 44-38, with a 7-2 spurt to start the second half. Coast Guard would use a 13-4 run to close out the third quarter, however, as the Bears' lead ballooned to 68-50 after three quarters and they cruised to the win.

For Coast Guard, four players scored in double-figures with sophomore Kira Wood leading everyone on the night with 27 points. Senior Kyra Hartman drained 17 and brought down a team-best nine rebounds, junior Jacqueline Ward contributed 11 points and a game-high seven assists and sophomore Lily Mika also added 11 points.

The Mariners will look to bounce back this Saturday, Feb. 5, when they host the Skyline's top team in Mount St. Mary College. Tipoff against the Knights is scheduled for 12-noon, the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
