Mariners Handle Anna Maria, 15-6, In Season-Opener At Home On Saturday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2022) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Anna Maria College, 15-6, on Saturday afternoon on a chilly, but picturesque day at Tomb Field. The win was coach Dan Paccione's first as a head coach at the collegiate level.

Freshman Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) had an impressive debut, as he led all players in the game with six points on four goals and two assists while three other Mariners had three-point performances– seniors Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.) and Zach Hasbrouck (Greenvale, N.Y.) with two tallies and one helper apiece, and classmate Liam Pickett (Charlotte, N.C.) with a goal and two assists.
 
In net, junior Samuel Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.) earned the victory after making one save in the opening half, while sophomore Coby Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had three stops in the second half.
 
Freshman Noah Lastner (Pasadena, Md.) won 13-of-20 faceoffs and picked up a game-high seven groundballs, while Hasbrouck and senior P.J. Darmody (East Islip, N.Y.) both had a team-high two caused turnovers each.
 
The Mariners also got two tallies from freshman Michael Emerick (Damascus, Md.) and four other also found the back of the net – junior Carter Hall (Annapolis, Md.), sophomores Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) and Erich Diehl (Long Valley, N.J.) and freshman Chris Neuman (South Huntington, N.Y.). Neuman also picked up five GBs.
 
The game was close until it wasn't. Anna Maria struck first, but the Mariners answered with three-straight before the AMCATs cut the lead back down to one with the final tally of the opening quarter.
 
The second and third quarters were all Merchant Marine, as the Mariners out-scored the visitors 9-1 over those 30 minutes combined.
 
For Anna Maria, freshman Hank Gittines tallied a hat-trick to finish with a team-high three points. In goal, grad student Griffin Moore suffered the loss despite making 18 saves.
 
The Mariners return to action on Wednesday night, March 2, when they play host to former Landmark Conference opponent Drew University. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.
