FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (May 1, 2021) – Playing without a full roster the entire season, and sometimes undermanned due to Covid-protocols, the USMMA women's lacrosse team ended the shortened 2021 season on Saturday competing for the Skyline Conference Championship once again. The #3-seed Mariners lost to top-seeded and undefeated Farmingdale State, 11-10, in an entertaining back-and-forth contest.
The Mariners, who end the year with a 4-4 record, were once again led by freshman
Reagan Jetter (La Jolla, Calif.) and sophomore
Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.), as Jetter recoded a game-high seven points on two goals and five assists, while Turrentine scored four times and dished out one helper. They both picked up a team-best four draw controls, and Jetter added three groundballs, with Turrentine scooping up two.
Sophomore
Meghan Malone (Crofton, Md.) contributed two goals on the afternoon and Merchant Marine also got tallies from freshman
Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) and sophomore
Phoebe Cho (Fairfax, Va.). Defensively, freshman
Lexi Dawson (Johns Creek, Ga.) led all players in the game with four caused turnovers, while junior
Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) had two CTs. Sophomore goalie
Jessica Gamsjager (Denton, Texas) made four saves in the loss.
The Mariners jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first six-plus minutes, but Farmingdale (8-0) rattled off four-straight to take a 5-4 lead at 8:06. After that, neither team would have a lead of more than two goals the rest of the day, as the two teams traded the final four goals of the opening half and USMMA went into the break trailing, 7-6.
After the Rams scored the first goal of the second half, the Mariners tallied three-straight – two from Turrentine that sandwiched one by Malone – and the Mariners led 9-8 at 8:19. FSC answered with two-consecutive goals in the following three minutes to regain the lead, but Malone struck once again less than a minute later to tie the score up at 10-10 with just 4:55 to go.
Jetter won the ensuing draw control, however the Rams forced a turnover right in front of the cage and charged down the field with less than four minutes to play. Farmingdale freshman Ashley Codispoti found the back of the net with the Rams playing man-up with just 1:39 to play to give the hosts the lead. After FSC secured the final draw control, they were able to run the clock down to claim the victory.
For the Rams, sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Perrini was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Skyline Tournament after making nine saves on the day (and 18 total over the tournament), while senior Courtney Gendels posted a team-high six points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore Athena Vogiatzis chipped in with four goals for FSC, who has earned the Skyline Conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
